Jet engine vanes marking

    Hi folks,

    Hoping someone can help me out with a silly question.

    Are jet engine vanes individually marked/stamped with a serial or makers number? Or is all the traceability done with documentation?

    Reason I ask is I have seen them being refurbished but do not remember seeing any markings.

    Also are other items like rivets marked with a serial number? if so how is it done?

    And, no, I'm not going to make or sell them. Just interested for a totally unrelated industry.

    Engine blades are marked with a serial number which is normally on the blade root. Fan blades will also have a moment weight stamped on the blade root as this is critical for the balance of the fan assembly and if a fan blade is to be replaced it needs to be replaced with a blade of the same moment weight or a matched pair needs to be replaced. These will be recorded in the installation documentation from the engine manufacturer or an engine shop if they were installed at an overhaul. All repairable/rotable components on an aircraft are serialised for traceability.

    Items like rivets are not serialised as they are consumables. They will have a batch number associated with them from the manufacturer but a batch will be thousands of rivets. The same goes for bolts/nuts/washers etc.

    Yeah as above, fan blades have a serial number and moment weight stamped on each one! Most blades will have a their number in the rotation written on the blade somewhere as well! Usually just with a marker though!
