Cycling regularly now for close on three years and still consider myself a novice. I might revise that assessment when and if I start passing more cyclists on the roads and hills than pass me. Until then...

On the plus side, I now appreciate why road bikes are better on the road than hybrids, that lycra has function as well as (in spite of?) form, and going down hill at life threatening speeds is an absolute blast! Vive la persistance.

Have you done a century ride?

Does your bike cost more than your car?

    Have you clipless pedals?

Have you gotten saddle sore and continued to ride through?

Have you dropped random riders on the road?

Have you gotten dropped by random riders on the road?

Have you 100+ posts on the Cycling board?

    :pac:

As soon as you start looking down on other riders for their bike/gear/hi-vis vest etc then you are a true cyclist.

Joined a club last year, decided I'd get myself a club jersey when I could complete a Sunday spin and not get dropped. It took a good while and I felt I should hand it back recently.

It would be "Stage 5". Just after "Stage 4", which is a Titanium Frame Bike. I did not list these, as it is too high on the ladder when someone is asking about being a newbie ;).

+3...that is your a newbie until you've experienced road rash at least 3 times.

Why crashing makes you an experienced cyclist is beyond me, but hey!

    No way!

You should wear it to the local pub. Make sure it's in the winter and you have a nice belly!

You need to be spotted in the boards jersey sightings. You'll obviously need to get one for that to happen.

    Still a newbie here.

    For FISMA.
I went for a spin this evening.
I left the county for the first time.
I was dropped by two hard core cyclists on boston hill.
I dropped a child on the way into celbridge, payback.
I stopped for tea and bikkies and a bit of chat with an aunt and uncle.
I took a shortcut on my hybrid along 10K of canal towpath, the canal has burst its banks in places, best bit of crack I've had in ages, power sliding a pushbike, rinsed the muck of it in the canal.

Lots of firsts for me, sure why would you want to be anything but a newbie?

    Niall
