Job Follow Up Conundrum!!!

    Hi There

I'm being made redundant in the next two weeks. This has been coming for a while so I was on the hunt for the last few months to secure a new position.

One role which I had identified a long way out was advertised last December 2011. I've been through a pretty tough selection process which involved a telephone interview and three face-to-face interviews. I got a phone call from their HR person in April asking if I was still interested in the position and obviously I was. She stated at the time that they were interested in me and basically she made an informal offer on the phone but wasn't in a position to make a formal offer until proper approvals had come through. She was in touch again in early May with pretty much the same spiel but that this time as soon as the approval came through they would be making an offer and indicating a start date. Naturally I was delighted. I've had my heart set on this job for a while.

As I said above I'm being made redundant. It could work out really well for me what with a redundancy payment and a probably new job start this Summer.

My question is should I contact the prospective employer and make them aware of my impending unemployed status? Or should I keep my trap shut and just wait in hope for the final formal offer to come through?

I suppose I'm hoping that by telling them of my immediate availability it might expedite the process. Wishful thinking maybe? What would a prospective employer make of this?

well i have to be honest with you here and say this falls directly in the realm of taking the initiative ...call them inform them of the impending cease of current employment and i would also stress to them that youve been looking forward to starting with them as "your ready for a new exciting challenge" personally i have never had any trouble calling prospective employers and making them fully aware that there business is the place i want to be

..live by the motto ..Nothing ventured Nothing gained ...grab the phone by the short and curlies and make that call if nothing else atleast youll pin them down to a def start date and offer

Good luck for the future kick sum ass

I'm kinda thinking along the same lines.

I'm finishing my current job on Friday. With holidays to take I'm not officially finished for another two weeks.

I'm thinking I'll stew on things over the weekend and let my mind settle after the happenings of the last couple of days.

But I'm leaning towards making that call.

Definitely make the call - very soon you will be unemployed, and I'm assuming you don't want to sit and wait indefinitely for this job offer to come to fruition - sooner or later you're going to be looking for a new job. It would be best to do that knowing where you stand with this current offer.

Ring them, let them know you will be available shortly, and that you are lining up other interviews. Does no harm to let them know you are not sitting waiting for their offer, but that you are activley seeking work and keen to get back to employment.

In early May they said they would be making an offer and indicating a start date, yet now it is the end of June and you haven't heard from them since?!

    Ring them!!

I'd ring them. But I wouldn't tell them about the redundancy - it's not relevant to them, and I can't see that it will spur them to get sorted any more quickly if they've already had almost three months in which they could have lost you to another employer.

I've got a phone call this morning from a recruitment agency I was in touch with last week. Similar role and they want to telephone interview early next week with a view to a face to face the following week all going well.

I'm thinking down the lines of what Little Ted suggested at the moment. I think I will get to the final stage of this 2nd opportunity and I think I've nothing to lose by putting the ones dragging their feet in the picture.

I can also understand JustMary's opinion of it's none of their business but at the same time I'd like to honest & upfront mainly because it's a job I've really set my heart on!!!
