My Sony vaio is acting up.It wouldn't boot for a few hours. It would power up and I could use the cd drive but the screen would stay blank. The only way I could shut down the system was to remove the battery.

Then two days later it was fine until I came down this morning and it looked like this .

It boots up and I can long in then after 2-5 minutes the screen changes.
Any idea what this could be ?

    Just one thing

Can you hook up your lappy to an external monitor ?

If you don't get this with an external screen, it means your screen is dying. If you get the same effect on an external screen it could be a different issue .

I nothing about fixing laptops, but To me that doesn't look like a screen issue but a graphics issue on the board. As you say hooking up to an external monitor is they way to check it. Maybe there's a web cafe you can run into and check it. Perhaps serch for that model number see if theres any known things that might fail.

Thanks lads.I checked it with an vga when I got home and it worked fine.I thought it would as its an intermittent issue only happening every now and then as in once or twice every three hours and this is why as Boston mentioned, I thought it might be a failing video/graphics card.I brought it back to sony as it was under warranty, less then a year old, and was told it was a virus.

I don't believe this as I run the same protection on every system I use and haven't pick up virus/malware in years and I don't download much and what I do download I'm very cautious with.

They can tell me its anything that like as long as they replace it.

Boot up on a Live CD Linux etc to eliminate the possibility of a virus.

If it works externally the it rules out the gfx. It must be related to the screen. Perhaps a pinched cable or something?
