    hi all,
so im gonna pop the question in the next 2 months, but im on the look for the ring:confused:
now herself has made it very clear the type of ring she would like, a single stone set on a neat yellow gold ring, thats fine by me.
like everyone, money is tight and we have talked and we wont get married for at least 18 months, we are both fine with that.
she is an aussie and suggested overcoming the cost of the ring by using an aussie company who use fake stones. and after you can afford little better i will replace the stone.
i was not over the moon with this as i would like my girl to have the real deal, but thats not possible quite yet. the company is called shhh secrets and they have shops all over oz and this is common practice she tells me.

what would peoples feelings be on this?
could anyone look at it and tell?
i could get a ring to match what she hinted at for $600 or so which would be great and replace the stone in the future

If that's what your girlfriend is happy with then go for it. As for people noticing, I'm my experience people don't really study the ring. They have a quick glance, say its lovely and that's the end of that. Plus I've had a real diamond on my finger for over a year which I do gaze at every day and I probably couldn't tell the difference in a real diamond and a fake.

Since you're looking for a very traditional (and very common) design, why not look for a secondhand or vintage ring?

I got the other half a 1920's art-deco engagement ring on eBay for a song and she absolutely loves it. Her friends call it her "Downton Abbey" ring ;)

Diamonds aren't rare, precious or worth anything near what they're sold for in jewellers so you can pick them up quite afford-ably this way. Even if you find the perfect stone in the wrong setting, there are lots of jewellers who could reset the ring using the gold from the original band which shouldn't cost the earth and would result in an absolute one-off piece for her.

My now husband proposed with a 'token ring' bought from fields which put him back about €200. It was great for the 8 months we had it (took that time to save up for a real ring). Now at the start it looked great, very sparkly but over time it did fade and cloud so just be aware that they can dull down after time.

But good luck, and it is a great way to get a ring for the proposal and change it later :-)

I don't think many people will be able to tell the difference. The ring design is lovely.

I am nowhere near the stage of getting married, but i love lab created stones.

I torment myself looking at diamond nexus.com. Would much prefer a lab created stone at a fraction of the cost and it look the practically the same as its over-priced real brother.

And at least if you lost the ring or got robbed, it wouldn't be thousand of euros worth of a ring gone.

Get it for her if she likes it. No-one needs to know its not a genuine diamond

agreed! u should most definitely try to buy a ring w/ real stones. have u looked online? there are some awesome sites with quality diamonds rings for reasonable prices. Check out james allen, whiteflash and there are a few others. james allen has a stunning collection yellow gold rings of all prices. they also have a great customer service team if u have any questions...i ordered from them twice (e-ring and wedding rings, and was super pleased both times!) hope this helps!
