I went for the basic model because I reckoned it would be cheaper to upgrade the ram and hd myself!

Where is a good place to buy RAM? Also what type do I need?

Regarding a SSD, I think I'm going to wait until the price drops on the 512gb models before I go for it.

Sorry to be the one to break this to you.. but there's not much you can do with regards upgrades on the new MBP.

Well unless it is a 2012 model of the Macbook Pro and not the Retina model, then it would be easy to upgrade RAM and HDD.

But if it is the new retina MBP, don't know if we will see any upgrade parts for that anytime soon

In that case Crucial is probably your best bet:
    http://www.crucial.com/eu/store/listparts.aspx?model=MacBook%20Pro%202.5GHz%20Intel%20Core%20i5%20(13-inch%20DDR3)%20Mid-2012&Cat=RAM
    €165 for 16GB RAM(2x8GB modules)
    (or €53 for 2x4GB modules)

That only applies to the Retina Pro. The regular MBPs, which were updated at the same time, are just as upgradable as they were before.
