Adventure Racing, is that running, paddling, climbing and biking?
Not sure but sounds like you're looking for a cross country bike. If the terrain is not too technical ie. not steep then with your height look at 29ers, the huge wheels mean the roll over stuff and down hill the rotational momentum of the big wheels will mean you don't need heavy gearing, you just need to wind it up. You wont need too much suspension either, 80mm is enough.
I've got nothing in your size but pm me if you need any help finding stuff.
You won't get a competitive bike in Ireland off the peg for €500 but maybe parts on ebay you will.

I have a Cube Attention 2012 that I bought a couple of months ago but have only done maybe 10 dry miles on it, front and rear mudguard on it, bottle holder, cable lock, under sear carrier yolk for tube fixing stuff, front rear light and even a rear view mirror.
Would want a little more than 500 though as it is 900 euro worth of stuff so if you could strech a little we could maybe make a deal.
Got recipts for bike of course, only reason for selling is that I want something better suited for commuting and less likely to get stripped/nicked in the company car park

Ya, thats adventure racing, its more about participating than competing for me. Have done races that had road bike section would like to try some mountain bike ones and some leisure trail cycling. A second hand bike would suit, ya a 29er would probably be best but I don't expect to get one at my budget. Thanks for the advice and offer of help, JonDoe.

Thanks for the post JH raheny, but 500 euro is my upperlimit.

This looks like good value to me, reasonable weight & a recon air fork, which are pretty good. Not in Munster I'm afraid.

If you look hard enough on ebay you'd pick up the bits needed for a rigid 29er (Kona Units are lovely springy steel as are on-one inbred's), look for wheelsets that include newish tyres, you'd need to look to uk sellers and convince them to ship via parcel2go.com.
    There's a nice 26er on ebipmtb
    http://forum.epicmtb.com/showthread.php?17454-Whyte-901-Hardtail
he's asking 6 but you've got 5 (immovable object and the irresistible force)
It's a lot of bike, 120mm light maxle forks,. It's a dublin club but have a look through their listings and don't let the city dwellers take advantage.

Does it have to be a hardtail? I've got a extra large Gary Fisher Sugar 3+ (2003)

    http://www.mtbr.com/cat/older-categories-bikes/2003-full-suspension/gary-fisher/sugar-3/prd_361276_1509crx.aspx,
It's only 8 months old. I do like it but I prefer 29ers, I could part with for €500 but would need to drop the drive train, cranks, front mech, rear mech and shifters down to a lightly used 8 speed setup, also the rear shock changed to an older but good fox rp2. Also you'd need to weigh in at no more than 80-85 kg as the spring in the rock shox duke is a light one and not really suitable for more weight (works really well for me, I'm 75kg). I've been running the bike on Disc Wheels so the stock Wheels and Brakes only has a months usage. Could meet up as far as Waterford.

I'm afraid the weight limit is to low for me. Hardtrail is my preference. Tks JonDoe

You might have more luck posting a wanted ad at one of these sites:

Plenty of treads on boards with advice on minimum spec you should be looking for.

    Good luck.
