You'l be lucky to get 32-35mpg's out of the 1.8 petrols...otherwise there there fine.
    1)abs sensors tend to fail.
2)watch out for worn lower balljoints.
3)check if aircon/heater is working on both sides if it has dual climate control.
The internal heater flaps can break which works out an expensive fix

There cheap to purchase compared to passats..A4's etc...:)

Would you recommend one?? The focus we have is doing about 470 miles to a 70 euro tank.. Can anyone give similar mileage readouts for a petrol 407?

I have a 1.8 Petrol 407 (2007), I can get about 500 miles to a fill (albeit from a 63 litre tank), trip computer shows an average of about 37mpg.

That's from mostly motorway driving with some short local trips.

Ok Jesus just test drove it and all I'll say is luxury in comparison to the focus!!!

They are comfy aren't they :D

Only other thing not covered above - make sure the radio/trip display in the centre console works correctly and doesn't suffer from fading in the heat - early models (04-06) were prone to this fault.

is the 407 1.6hdi the same engine thats in the berlingo and ford focus, dont they give lots of trouble while the 2litre is not near as bad

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 133 ✭✭bennya

    Yes, it's the same engine.

I've no direct experience with the 1.6HDi, though I believe that once they're serviced on the button and given a good quick motorway run once a week they're grand. Row seems to be the expert in this regard so I'll bow to greater knowledge :)

Very comfy car alright think the wife wants an estate now any experience lads?

Also found a 2 litre 05 79000 miles immaculate condition for 2000 euro half tempted bargain due to engine size

And you get the 6 speed gearbox in the 2litre which is a bonus too

Would the 2 litre be more fuel efficient than the 1.8 with the fact it has a 6 speed gearbox? Motorway driving I do btw

Have to disagree with most posters here. 2L 407 (from new) was probably the worse car I/we ever had (wife's car). Admittedly a nice looking car but between faulty software (constant updating) and regular mechanical problems/defects from new, it was a pain.

So happy when we finally got rid of it.

It's really luck off the draw. Regarding elec problems only problem I've ever had is a bad earth on the rear left cluster but easy fix thanks to row.
    There very comfy cars.
    Great poke for over taking.
I'd defo do the diesel though.
Mines a taxi and gets some abuse.
Only ever had to replace one lower ball joint which was last week.
    As I say 300,000 on a pug
Keep her serviced with the proper oil and u will b happy

Whats the view on the facelifted C5. I presume it shares a lot of the mechanicals with the 407?

They seem to be going fairly reasonably - something like this for instance.

Doing a bit of car shopping at the minute and spotted this on Cargiant. I wouldn't have major knowledge on cars but this seems like a good deal to me. Anybody have any experience with this type of 407? Seems that they depreciate quite heavily.
