my brother in law has a honda civic coupe automatic 1.7 for sale for nearly 2 years. It is a 2002 in perfect condition he advertised it on done deal got no interest then left it in to a local garage to sell it, still nothing ,he is now on the point of almost giving it away, any body here any interest in such a car ? or how much he might get for it if the right buyer came along, the body is perfect, unmolested, the engine is perfect, i recon the auto box is what is putting people off

sadly who ever put an auto box into that was way too drunk

its not a Merc SL class ffs.

People who want small cheap cars with an Auto box will not buy something 'sporty' like a civic coupe.

People who want sports cars with an auto box won't buy a civic.

Unfortunately it must have been a special order when new or something, rendering it completely out of most peoples criteria.

All the civic coupes where built in the US for some reason, even the previous generations.

The tax on the 1.7 would put many in the market for a smallish auto off too.

If I'm right, this car is blue/navy???

If this is so, he had it pretty highly priced too in fairness.

I remember seeing the ad a couple of times, and thought, that's a crazy price. I wasn't surprised it hadn't sold.

(FWIW it was a very clean looking car :) )

Ah ok, there was a blue/navy one for sale, similar to one you described, and it was up for a lot of money, and was up for a while too :)

You see op, the biggest problem with that car, that any self respecting honda driver will want it manual, even if it is a 1.4.

You see it's all about VTAK!!!!!! You need to keep revs up to 6-7k in each town or any place where there is a possibility of people gathering, so everyone would hear the lovely note of VTAK!!!! Auto box is not convenient for this .

*i am just messing Honda drivers, I know there are a few nice Honda drivers out there ;)

ya you are right of course, but perhaps there is a guy out there who could swap out the autobox then he would have a very solid low mileage car

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

I think you'd get some people interested. Used to be a good few coupes around many of them imports and a lot were automatic's. Used to see older guys or girls driving them. If its in good nick and you took some really great photos of it, that would help a lot. Though I think you can sell a car easier in a national paper than the web, as many people especially older people don't use the web, but do look at the ads in the papers.

If the photos are a good reflection on how it looks now, it has nct on it, then can really see it go for maybe 1k eu? For how much was he selling it in the first place? If it was well priced its hard to believe it never sold, as it does look lovely on photos.

It wouldn't be worth that effort I don't think.

Isn't that VTEC ? You're right of course, no self respecting VTEC head would buy an Auto. It's like non-alcoholic beer . . . what's the point ?!

    Ken

VTEC also improves fuel economy vs a regular engine which would help to offset the auto. Its also a very reliable engine. Some people also like auto's for various reasons. Not everyone is a closet racing driver/boy racer. As such you'd have to advertise if off the web.

I've never considered a Civic, auto or otherwise but surely someone would like it? I had a lot of bother with my left knee earlier in the year and was strongly considering buying an automatic as I found it painful to press the clutch in my Pug.

It's surely not that unusual to have a small sports car with auto. Peugeot made limited numbers of 205 GTI autos, and there was the Mazada MX3 which could be had with an auto box iirc. I'm sure there are others.

    It does...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

If he prices that right then he should get some interest. Its hardly a "boy racer" car so its not like its limited in its potential market. I think he needs to be realistic about the asking price though; a 10 year old 1.7 petrol Civic goes against pretty much everything that "post 2008 1.4 diesel" Ireland is looking for in a car! Priced keenly on DoneDeal then he may attract some interest, but noone will look twice at it if its too expensive.

Off the road two years, probably no NCT, should get 700 for it anyway, whereabouts is it county wise?

VTEC is just Honda's version on variable valve timing. The vast majority of their engines use it for better economy at lower revs etc, like most manufacturers.

The high performance versions are just the ones most people hear of.

If it was a shade of lilac you'd have the OAP's all over it.

unfortunately the vtec doesnt kick in on my CL9 until 7000 rpm.

Unless you have wide open roads and no cops its hardly ever utilised sadly.
