    folks,

I'm in the process of restoring a 1980 Landcruiser, and it's nearing completion. :)

However, I'm trying to decide on the best tyres for it. As the beast is rather retro looking, I want with white text on the sidewall. The rotten old things on it are 205R16, so I was thinking of sticking with that. If you click on the link below it'll bring you to my dilemma page on eiretyres.com. Can someone suggest a tyre that offers a good mix of value / safety / retro style etc?

    Thanks

Avon AT rangers come with white lettering, dunno if youre brand snobby though.

Id be just getting whatever tyre and getting the rubber paint for the lettering.

Camskill have a huge selection. Won't you need 5 tyres?

thanks Colm, what are they like in the real world re wear, grip etc? Any experience?

On a side note: Camskills seem cheaper then eiretyres, although the website is less tidy.

Not sure if they're available in that size but BF Goodrich All Terrains look good on the 40 series, that's if you're going for the slightly more aggressive look. They are also one of the best selling off road tyres for a reason, check around for prices though as eiretyres seem to be pricey on some brands I've looked at.

Btw I'm very envious of your 40 build, have been dreaming of owning one of those for too long! In the meantime i'll make do with shelling out €600 for tyres for my 90 series:(

TrailerBob, I checked the BFGs, but even the smallest 215/70/16 would cost €610 landed in Ireland.

I can get 4 of these for 350 euro landed.

Are they really worth the extra mula? (I'll be doing 90% road driving)

Not if you'll be doing mostly road driving, and I'm guessing you won't be doing massive mileage either. The Toyo will be more than sufficient for a weekend runabout. Just dont quite return the same mileage as a BFG imo

Thanks for all the help guys. Can someone tell me if this tyre will mount on an original toyota split rim, like this?

What i'm unsure of is how the tyre seals on a split rim. I've never used them before. Also, the wheels require tubes. I presume these are fine to use with tubeless tyres?

    Thanks

    Tyres:

The same circumference tyre as the 205R16 is 265/70R16 BFG A/T KO.
RWL raised white lettering is on one side.
Wet grip and long life are the best in class.
www.bfgoodrich.co.uk will also give you Irish BFG dealers. We have loads of dealers here. Why give our money to other governments to pay for their schools and hospitals. Any way...

    Rim:
The rim will take the wider tyre. But even if the tyre is tubless, you will still need a heavy duty tube to keep the tyre inflated as the wheel has an o ring.

You will also need a flap or rim "bandage" which fits around the rim to stop the tube rubbing off the rim. There cheap. You will need an experienced dealer to fit the tyres as the o ring can fly up and take some ones head off when its not in place and 50psi in the tyre.
