Depends how bad the problem is, sometimes just driving it hard in a low gear on the way to the NCT will be enough to clear it for the test. Is it a petrol or diesel and is the test results way off the mark or just borderline?

If the exhaust system is sound the best way to prepare is an decent drive coupled with air filter and plugs if they're due. If the car is serviced and there's nothing wrong with it it should walk the emissions.

Do you think you have an issue with the car that would cause an emissions problem? If the car is correctly maintained and running perfectly then you shouldn't have a problem.

Ya the last few times it's failed on the emission. Only for me to get the guy from the local garage to bring it in and they get it passed

    Lovely.

I suggest you instead focus on what's wrong with the car and get that fixed rather than continuing to have emissions issues fixed a underhanded way.
Get it diagnosed by a mechanic. Could be cheap to fix.

I had it hooked up and they could not find out what is wrong.

So there was no fault codes? The mechanic should be able to tell what's wrong anyway, from just looking at the emissions read-out.

So far we know it's a petrol but what emissions are high (both at high and low rev)? HC, CO or Lambda? How high?

Its on the high revs. Think it is on the CO.

Would the lambe sensor be faulty. Car was in a car crash a few years back.

Check on the NCT paper please. Us guessing various scenarios isn't going to fix your car ;)
