Taxing a second-hand car

I just recently purchased a second-hand vehicle privately.
The change over ownership has been done on-line, however I am still waiting to be issued with the Vehicle Registration Certificate.
How can I tax the car now? Can it be done on-line - I don't have a pin?
The current tax disc is months out of date so I don't fancy getting stopped by The Garda Siochana themselves.

It is illegal to drive without tax so the car should not be driven on a public road.

You can't. You can tax it when you get the new certificate. Or if the changeover has been processed & is on the system, you may get to tax it in the local motor tax office.

If the tax is out already, you get a form from the garda station (or download it here) and tax the car using this form (either post it or bring it in to the tax office). You won't get the VLC until the car is taxed.

Thats only if the car was imported and VRT'd.
This seems to be a standard 2nd hand purchase of an Irish registered car, so the VLC will be issued as soon as the details are processed.
