Has anyone been and is it good on your own? I'd be into a museum or two and some local grub.

Great city. Fantastic food and atmosphere. Not so much in the way of museums there. MAMBO is the only one of note, and its an art gallery. But you could walk from the city to San Luca chapel on the hill just outside the old town walls. There is a covered walkway with 3.6km of portico's all the way up. Great view from the top.

Just bear in mind that it is about 38 degrees there at the moment and as it is inland it stays very hot until September.

Most of the centre of Bologna, being a city founded by the Romans in 2BC, is a "Museum" as such. You will find interesting things, each with its own story, virtually on every corner.
    Real museums as such are:
    - Museo Egiziano
    - Pinacoteca
Both are on the left of Piazza Maggiore, as you face San Petronio church (the 'cathedral').
Food is great just about everywhere, but DON'T be fooled and go into the tourist trap restaurants in the city centre - they'll skin your wallet.
Rather choose a trattoria or osteria (usually family run). Prices are WAY cheaper. If in doubt about the quality - look for one that has a number of trucks parked outside at mealtime. Truck drivers, as a rule of thumb, eat where the food is good, plentiful and not expensive.
Typically you can get a full 3 course meal for about €20
