Random BSODs, and reboots

    Hello all,

    Have gotten a few BSODs and reboots. The BSODs error codes were 0x0000007a and 0xc000000e, with the latter being caused by "boot failed due to required device missing".

    If I look at the logs with Computer Management under System, the reasons for the crashes are;
    The bdfm service failed to start due to the following error:
    A device attached to the system is not functioning.
    and this happened at;
    19:58
    21.42
    22.25
    22:38

    Also at 22.25, teh following happened;
    The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000007a (0x0000000000000020, 0xffffffffc000009d, 0xfffffa80066017c8, 0x0000000000000000

    The ONLY change I made to the system was a adding a three pin 80mm*80mm*25mm fan to the rear of the case, to help extract air from around the graphics card to heat it down.

    Anyone have any ideas? How would the small fan be affecting the PC so badly?

    Run this and see what it says. The download link is down at bottom of pg under feedback, the zip file one is grand.

    I got a heap of bluescreens at the wkend, like 3 in 15 mins and I was like :eek::confused:, wtf, ran the above anyway and it linked it to the buggy external HDD I'd plugged in earlier to format that wasn't working right with a WD Live-->lip sync prob.

    I was like you, "how could that do that?", all was grand after a Format.

    Did that, and got the below picture.

    Not a clue on what is causing it :/

    Any chance you put the fan on backwards and decreased airflow?

    No. Checked it before I screwed it on, and checked it there again. Random crashes due to heat (GFX Card would freeze the GUI when it got too hot) I got last summer, but not the BSODs.

    Run Prime95(Blend and In place FFTs), say 2hrs each, and see if she's stable.

    If they dont stop before you halt them, run Furmark for 30mins to be sure the GPU is fully functioning.

    You could try this application for reading your crash dumps, it can give some more information.

    WhoCrashed 3.04 - Scroll down a bit to get the download link.
    http://www.resplendence.com/downloads

    It should automatically read from your "C:\Windows\Minidump" once you press analyze.

    Yea, that's not much help.:( Mine linked straight to an external device.

    Goggling both those files together gets this but every test going is in it, be quicker to just reinstall windows.

    Goggling that ataport.sys on it's own and theirs a lot of results for it being caused by a rootkit.

    Could try posting a thread up here.

    It's possible you knocked against a card or memory chip, and it's not quite sitting right in the slot.

    I'm thinking the problem may have been the PCI-E SATA slot, as it's just slotted in, but not really held on (the slot bar that it was attached to wasn't tall enough for the case, so it's just hanging there. I think I may have pushed against it in the past, but it seems to be okay now. Will reseat the RAM and graphics card if I get another BSOD, though.
