    Hi folks.

I know there are a million threads on these but I guess everyone wants their own personal advice and I'm no exception!

A mate is emigrating and is selling his 07 Octavia 1.9 tdi. Has 78,000 km and he'll let it go for €4.5k. I'm going to have a look at it this weekend, what should I be looking out for?

His wife had a bit of a tip which he says only damaged the bonnet and wing, which were fixed. This wouldn't bother me anyway. He's not sure what variation it is power-wise. Am I right in thinking there'e either a 90 or 110 hp? How does one know which it is?

Do these cars suffer from DPF and/or clutch/flywheel issues and if so when could one expect these problems to surface or how to take preventative measures.

Have visited honestjohn but would like to get the valued opinions of the boards.

    Thanks.

If the car is straight that sounds like a great price

I drove a 08 1.9 tdi for the last 4 1/2 years, just changed it 2 weeks ago. Had it from new and it had 220,000 on it when I was done with it.

The only major fault I had was a turbo replacement somewhere around the 150k mark (if I remember rightly) Everything else was run of the mill, wear and tear replacements.

Plenty people said to me that they can be known to take a clutch and flywheel alright ... but again it didn't affect me so can't confirm or deny.

And i think they all are all 105 bhp.

Octavia 1.9 TDi of that vintage has 105bhp and doesn't have a DPF. Any service history with it? That engine is very solid once it is looked after properly.

Thanks for the quick replies lads.

Still not getting the joke about my car and the Octavia boot...

The car should have been well serviced as it was his company car and he then bought it from them for his wife - I'll be checking that anyway.

Are they easy enough to routinely service at home? I usually get a Haynes manual for whatever I have and do my own servicing, I'd be hoping to continue this with the Octavia.

The 1.9 TDi is a tried and tested engine, it has been around for almost 20 years in one shape or form. They are not complex like modern day diesels so once the right grade oil is used and it is frequently serviced then I cannot see it having any major issues.

The size of the Octavia's boot has been a long-running joke around here. It got old about a year ago tbh.

Ha! Thought that might be it but one can never predict sarcasm. Even the Octavia might struggle to fit a Discovery in the boot though!

Check the boot , spare wheel well for water/ dampness, friend had 06 model from new, lots of trouble with water in wheel well, it would be full after rain, replaced rubber seal and rear windscreen x2 , could never get to the bottom of it, he traded in the end , was just fed up with having a swimming pool in the boot. If you Google its theres lots of info about Octavias and leaky boots.

Wonder was the rear wiper hose loose on your friends car?

I had a 2002 1.9 tdi octavia and it was a great engine. I sold it with 215,000 km on the clock and it never gave any problem.

Things you need to do are timing belt change every 60k miles or so, I replaced the MAF once and just keep the oild changed every 7k miles or so and it will just keep running.
