Basically, My father is reaching long overdue retirement. He is currently in a 2.0 D-4D new model Avensis on a 10 reg. It is his intention to change cars next year to meet his ripening body. (ewwww)

He will be buying new and most likely with the intention of keeping the motor until the bitter end.

He won't be doing massive mileage day to day but will be taking trips around the country "now and then" with the mother as they see fit.

    The Criteria.

The reason for the change is to get something a bit higher up so they can both get in and out with ease. My mother suggested the Yeti but I killed this. If you've met me then you'd know that I am a big fellow. My father is taller and stockier and to be honest it would be like a pimple on an elephant in a Yeti.

Must be new. Second hand is not an option, don't try and change him here. I've given up trying.

Petrol or Diesel. He is the stereotype of wanting Diesel for lower tax bands etc.... I do however think that I could convert him back to petrol with a good push.

Lowerish TAX. He's on a pension now and would rather not be forking out over 500 quid a year on tax.

Reliability. Something that won't be in and out of the garage every second week breaking his heart and burning my ear with abuse for suggesting it.

    The No No's

Like me, my dad is a snob with cars. He has never driven fancy cars. We're talking about a man who drove Opel and then to Toyota when the Opel's acted up.
    As such:
    No French
    No Italian
Preferably not VAG but don't rule them out.

The first motor to come to mind for me was the new Hyundai IX35. Any feedback on these and any other suggestions welcome. :)

For those who haven't met you or your Dad how big is he? A lad I know just bought an IX35, he used to have a Qashquai so likes that sort of car.

I've no idea about reliability, but drove an automatic Ford Grand C-Max for a few days recently (rental), and it meets the criteria for space for large people, and convenient seats for people with hip/knee problems.

Tallest person in the car was 6'4, and they didn't complain.

    Update:
It was the Grand C-Max with the sliding back doors.

My dad is on his 6th Avensis now 3rd Diesel one.

Like your dad he had a 2010 silver 2.0 D4D and afew weeks ago got a 2012 Black D4D.

They are a fine car tbh, only option if that is too low is a jap/korean suv or a ford s-max

Well we both played second row for long enough.

He's about 6ft 2 and pretty broad shoulders.

    Legs are the long bits.

Unless he's lots over 16 stone I can't see any car/suv yoke bigger than a focus/golf being anyway cramped tbh :)

I have no clue what size playing 2nd row point to :pac:

In case your parents haven't noticed this already, people with more limited mobility often find that leather non-bucket seats are easier to get in and out of, as you can swivel and slide. If a car is suitable in other ways except the seats, see if you can find the same car with leather seats and try that.

Kuga is being replaced by an all new model by the end of this year.

Kia Sportage, basically the same car as the IX35 but prettier imo and comes with a 7 year warranty.

Yeah that was on my hit list too to be honest.

Trying to sway him to KIA could be tough but worth it. :)

One issue I can see is that none of the cars mentioned so far (which satisfy other criteria) come with petrol engines.

The IX35 seems to be selling quite well. It's worth a test drive at a minimum.

I suppose others to consider would Q3, X1 (looks horrible and I love BMW's), the Honda yoke - I've forgotten the name or if he fancied push the boat out maybe the RR Evoque.

The IX35 is probably as good a bet as anything in this range at the moment.

The Evoque is slowly going on me though.

VW Golf Plus. My parents got one and never looked back. My Dad is a big fella who now has Parkinsons and he still puts it down as an easy car to get in and out of. Seats are highish and the doors are big with a "tall cut" not a sloping one so they are excellent for elderly people.

They are also very comfortable especially on bouncy country back roads so perfect for long distances. I regularly drive the car all over the country to GAA matches and it's very good IMO.

If your Dad intends keeping the car long term he might consider an automatic, most elderly people need them sooner then they think.

He doesn't mind forking out 20k-25k on a new car but he can't afford 0.5k in tax? I don't need to see his passport as proof that he is Irish :)

Why did you tell him not to buy a Yeti BTW?

I'm just under 6'2 and about 15 stone and there haven't been many cars that I do not fit in comfortably. One exception that comes to mind was the FIAT cinquecento (seicento was fine as was the original Uno)

Is having a mid-life crisis? Is his eyesight starting to fail?

Perhaps a Nissan Juke would do the trick.

I am 18 stone ( 115 kg google said its 18 stones lol ) and I for in to mx5 with no problems. Haters will hate!

Anything that is bigger then mx5 should not be a problem for OPs dad, unless he is even bigger then me, which I doubt.

More of a Jeep but worth a look.... Bit a girly cliche attatched to them though.

Q3 and X1 could well be out of the "Non Fancy" cat he would appeal too but I'll stick them on the list. As for the RR.... He's a biased bloke like myself and I could never swing an RR. Not pushed on them either myself.

Re the TAX and new car scenario. New car is mainly because "he doesn't want to inherit anybody elses problems" I can't change his views and you know I agree with you especially when the TAX comes into play but that's just the way he rolls.

Re the Yeti, He's worked hard all of his life. If he's buying a lifer then I personally think that if he will be spending any kind of duration in a motor that he should do so in comfort. I've had a Yeti briefly and whilst I like the driving position I just don't think it cuts the grade for long distance. It's not off the cards, I am just trying to open his eyes to other motors out there aswell.

Are you pushing 70 with back troubles / knee issues etc ? I understand why they want something raised. They can afford it and it's what would make them happy. In saying that, I nearly had him primed to buy an RX8 about 8 years back. It's just not his cup of tea I suppose. :)

    Toyota Urban Cruser?
Only saw one at the lights the order afternoon, an older chap driving it too. I've the same mission my self for the old chap. He has a Suzuki Vitara at present and would like to move to automatic....! He's 80. Looking for something with a low door cill?

    Is there a budget here?

Everyone seems to be suggesting cross-overs, but if this is a car for the long-term is he planning to spend a bit more?

Volvo have a min-sized SUV that looks good.
    I think its the C-90 or CX-90?

Standard budget for what it would cost to replace an Avensis one would assume. I could say Money isn't an issue but Porches etc are out to be honest. Plain sailing "standard" car is the agenda.

The Volvo CX-60 still fetches crazy money as they are quite new to the market and expensive new.

A friend of mine is in similar situation, retired, very big guy (tall and stocky) and he's been very very happy with his Kia Soul . Can't say I'm a personal fan of the looks but it seems to tick all the boxes. (Nothing wrong with Kia's btw, OH has one that I'm very happy with, just dont like the look of this particular one)

Not sure if the Octy scout is still available as they are fazing out the old Octavia as the new model is due next year.

    However,
I hear there is now a Superb Scout available/soon to be available.
