One of Irish cyclings great characters Sam D'Arcy passed away on Saturday morning and was buried today. He leaves a great legacy behind him in the form of the Gorey 3 Day for which he was main organiser for neary 50 years.

The local clubs in Wexford are planning a short tribute ride on wens evening if anyone is around and would like to support it.

I didn't know the man but he said a couple of words about his late wife at the presentation of the Betty Darcy Memorial last year and you could see how emotional he was. He was obviously devoted to her as well as being a great cycling man.

    RIP

I'll be riding this , Sam lived and breathed cycling if you met him walking down street he'd be wearing a cycling cap or a pair of mitts . He opened his bike shop last year and would repair kids bikes for practically nothing . He allowed that cycling had given him so much that he was giving a little something back . Hopefully there will be a good turnout on Wednesday he deserves it . RIP Sam .

I hope there will be a good turn out for this. It is appropriate and a worthy cause.

Ah thats awful news. So sorry to hear Sam has passed away.
He was an absolute gentleman. Got me started in cycling waaaay back when I was only about 16 and myself and my friend wanted to take up the sport.
Coming from a poor background I could barely afford the sport and he helped me out time and again.
I remember trying to hang on to him in the IRC club races when he would wind up that massive 53x11 to the finish :-)
What a legend - he'll really be missed.
    RIP.

I'll be down straight from work on Wednesday - lovely idea to have the spin in his honour.

Sorry to hear he passed away, RIP.

Will there be many leisure riders at this tomorrow or is it going to be mostly racing cyclists?

From what I've read, it'll be a very social affair, no 40kmph pace.

Some pictures from tonights ride in celebration of Sam.

Over 60 cyclists from both the local clubs and from as far away as Dublin, Bray And Kilkenny signed on for the ride.

The spin took in 2 laps of the Crannford circuit that Sam traversed regularily on bike, motor cycle and lead car!

Pat Maguire will donate the nights proceeds of €370 to Gorey Hospice on Saturday in Sams memory.

    RIP Sam D'arcy.................
