Record Player

    Hi Guy's,

probably not the right section for a post but I'm sure a mod will move it if required.

To get started I was looking for a record player for ages and finally yesterday purchased one, Now it was in beat up condition etc.

I have cleaned it up and got it working, It didn't come with the original speakers and had no built in speaker, So I hooked up a set of headphones and voila got some sound out of it.

What I am wondering is where I would buy a replacement needle / cartridge /stylus (styli) for it in Ireland or online ?

Also there is a fair amount of crackling and popping when the sliders are moved does anyuone have any idea on how to clean out the sliders or is it a problem with something else ?

Any help or links to online resources would be great, have done a bit of digging around and haven't came up with much so far.

The record player in question is a Ferguson (Thorn) 3052, made in Britain from around the 1975 ' ish era.

any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Bit of compressed air on the faders and pots should clean them up and stop crackling. As for the stylus and needle, try cleaning it with a soft tooth brush/cotton bud. I did this recently on an old player we pulled out of the attic and it worked perfectly.

use Servisol (get it at Peats) for cleaning pots faders. You'll need a new stylus at least, eBay is a good source for vintage NOS (new old stock) styli and cartridges for old stereos like those Fergusons. Not worth putting too much money into - if it doesn't work after spray - don't bother replacing the stylus

Donberg.ie sell styli, they're in Donegal if you want to go Irish, but as said plenty of shops on ebay sell them.

Donberg are great - forgot all about them. I used to use them all the time for parts - they post stuff out very quickly

Hey, sorry Im posting here but I cant figure out how to start a new thread.
I am looking to buy my boyfriend a new turntable for home use for his 20th birthday as his current one broke.
My problem is I know absolutely nothing about them. He listens to mainly hip hop so would I need a certain type of player? Also should I get one with built in speakers or that plug into speakers? Id be willing to spend up to 150 but after that would probably be too dear.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

try Cloney Audio in Blackrock. I'm assuming he doesn't want to scratch on it - just listen. If he wants to scratch, you're looking at a Technics SL-1200, or a Vestax. For listening only, Cloney will set you on the right path for your budget
