Just wondering what sort of cable goes from the outlet into the UPC set top box ? Is it just standard aerial cable ?

Basically yes, but they usually use extra screened cable like Satellite quality cable. Using very cheap thin cable may or may not work depending on how strong the signal is. Best to use satellite quality cable.
