Lufthansa for transatlantic flights

Just wondering if many of you have flown with Lufthansa. I have been pricing flights on skyscanner and Lufthansa are way cheaper than other airlines. As the flight is to New York and I have never flown with Lufthansa I wonder how many of you would recommend the airline (especially for long haul!)

It's a long way to go in the wrong direction do unless it's remarkably cheaper than going direct I wouldn't. (Unless you mean the United flight from Dublin to Newark which Lufthansa just codeshare on)

Otherwise, it depends on the plane: some of the Lufthansa fleet (namely the 747's) don't have setback entertainment etc. Service and food is good, however in my experience.

It is a direct flight there and back (Dub to NY), at 458. As far as I can see its a Lufthansa plane

That's a codeshare then. You'll be on a United flight as Buffybot suggested.

I have flown Lufthansa long-haul to Asia a few times. Find them very reliable and enjoyable for both long-haul and shorter flights. Would recommend in general. Obviously have no idea about the specific route you mentioned.

Indeed, Lufthansa don't fly from Dublin to the US directly. The United flight will be on a single aisle plane but will have on demand entertainment at each seat. Food is generally ok in my experience.

If it's direct from Dublin it will be the United flight on an ageing but updated Boeing 757 narrow body. It would feel a bit cramped for 6 hours or so but the seat pitch is the same as other planes. Personally, if the price difference isn't huge I would chose Aer Lingus as their A330s are nicer and comfier but if others are really cheaper then I'd go for it!

I prefer the narrow bodies for flights to the US. If nothing else, when you arrive you're only in the midst of (say) 180 people instead of twice that number. All other things being equal you will have less queuing, less delaying, etc . . .

Not sure disembarkation of 180 passengers throught 1 aisle would be considerably faster than 300 passengers through 2 aisles.

Unless they add double doors to the planes then it's 300 people through 1 door vs 180 people through 1 door that is the consideration.

Also, it's 300 sets of bags vs 180 sets.

It's just a personal preference on my part and of course there will be times when something like a delay with the baggage handlers or the air bridge will delay everything anyway. My point was qualified by "all other things being equal", but I know that all other things are not always equal.

Glad I didn't book the other day, the flights from dub to ny are now at 350 with lufthansa. It is a united plane. Thank you so much for your feedback, you've helped to make up my mind. The on demand entertainment is something that would encourage me to book with them as well. Thanks again!!:):)

Hi, I left it to book it this morning and got the flights for E304 each with Lufthansa, United Airline plane, my flights are the end of november to the middle of december. I put in a couple of different dates and got different prices but they all came out between 3 and 350. It was booked with skyscanner and they relocated me to lastminute.com. I'm delighted because the cheapest I ever got a flight from Dub to NY was E400 and that was 3 years ago!:):)

Wow. That is an absolutely insane price for NY, well done you!!

If I could find the time to go (and had a Visa Debit that wasn't rendered useless by the Ulster Bank fiasco) I'd be all over it :D

Ha I had the same problem with UB visa debit (plus funds not being paid into my account) I booked it on my sisters laser card. I got so excited about the price of the flights, if I didn't book it this morning I was so afraid I'd lose the bargain!!!!:):)

Hope someone might be able to help me with this. When I booked my flights I didn't get the option to book our seat. We're flying with Lufthansa but on a United plane. I don't want to arrive at the airport to be told that myself and my husband can't sit together. I'm a fairly nervous flyer. Should I contact Lufthansa or United about seats or is this the norm that we can't book the seats before the day of flying. Also I've never checked in on line, do you get you seat numbers then???? Would be great if someone had info on this! :):):):):):):)

you can checkin online with lufthansa the night before no probs and you will have seat allocation at that stage.

Er, by that stage most good seats will most likely be gone.

OP, depending on where you booked this you should have some type of reservation number that you can use on www.united.com to retrieve & manage your reservation, including seat allocation.

Sometimes when you book with a Travel Agent or Expedia/Last Minute type site they just send you emails with what seems like random gibberish, chances are there is a second PNR or Airline Reference number in there somewhere that will give you access to your booking on UA's site.

You're not flying Lufthansa at all ;)

You're flying with United. You can select seats in advance at United.com, but to do so, you'll need the United PNR (booking code). Now, to get that you will need to contact whoever you booked with originally as it most likely not be the same as the one United hold for you on file. OR you can always try phoning United, giving them the dates/flight numbers/passenger names and get them to do it that way. You will then get seat numbers.

Checking in online gives you your boarding pass.

Thank you so much! :) I had tried to book in with United but I was entering the wrong number, I'm so delighted to have my seats booked as I'm nervous about flying. Boards is great when you are sorting out holidays. I've had great advise so thanks again Buffybot!!!! :D:D:D

I did this with the PNR number, delighted to have it done!! Thanks so much for your help!! :):)
