A coin toss could decide final US 100m spot

    USATF announcement

If the athletes don't agree to a run off a toss of a coin will be used. Seems bizarre, maybe rankings would have been a better determination. What would happen if it was a dead heat in the Marathon trials, a run off is hardly an option!

Chances of a dead heat in the marathon are probably 420 times more unlikely than a dead heat in the 100m.

To be honest, if they don't agree to a race off, then tough luck on both of them, a coin toss is the fairest method of deciding this.

Well if I didn't think I'd win the run off I wouldn't agree to a run off .
at least with coin toss I'd have a 50/50 chance...

Seems like madness to use a coin toss in this situation...

    ah...just noticed...
"If the athletes disagree, the tiebreaker will be a runoff. "

that makes sense...so only a coin toss if both athletes agree to it.....

Hoping Tarmoh wins the run off but realistically Felix is the strong favourite.

Dont see why Felix doesnt step down from the 100m, she has no chance of a medal anyway and it would only interfere with her 200m chances. She also has the relays to think about. I doubt Nike would be too happy with her if she did though.

Tarmoh is talking about not running now...
Herself sand Felix are traing partners as well apparently, Felix called her to invite her to join her group when she was leaving College

Disagree. Yes, she hasn't yet proven her pedigree over 100m in a championship context, but get her to the final in London, which is quite feasible, and I wouldn't rule her out of a minor medal. Maybe not gold, but 10.98 took silver in Beijing. VCB, Jeter and Fraser-Pryce would be the obvious choices for the top three spots, but I've no doubt Felix could drop a high 10.8x which is medal territory.

She already has 2 silver medals from previous Olympics. What exactly does another silver or bronze prove? She needs that gold, to cement her place as the greatest female 200m runner of all time, and running the 100m is only going to get in the way of that goal IMO.

I think Veronica Campbell-Brown and her back-to-back Olympic golds (against Felix) might just have something to say about that. Felix has 3 world titles I know and a marginally better P.B. (she ran a new P.B. of 21.69secs this year as opposed to VCB's P.B. of 21.74 from Beijing 2008) but two golds at the Olympics is much more impressive and Campbell-Brown also has the World title from last year.
Both are great in their own right but even a gold for Felix cannot cement her as the greatest of all time although I agree it would put her well up there in the discussion. On the other hand if VCB wins it then she undoubtedly would be the best in living memory in what would be her 3rd consecutive Olympic gold in that event.

Wrong choice of word I admit.

Greatest IMO if she were to win gold. For me it's not just about the winning, but the manner of it aswell. Her technique and form is textbook perfect and would be an example you would show to all kids competing. Poetry in motion.

I don't see why she wants to do the 100m and hand away her slight advantage over VCB. What use is it getting a bronze in the 100 if she ends up with another silver in the 200? I think she will win the gold if she goes solely for the 200. Felix is at her peak now and this is her great chance, and being 30 in Rio, London could be her last great chance. I don't think VCB will be in 21.74 shape come London, though I could be wrong. If conditions are right Felix could run close to 21.60 in London IMO.

Both athletes are fantastic. Felix has a perfect running style, whereas VCB can be more forced. But then again, for the majority of people, pushing yourself to the max may not look pretty! VCB is heavily involved in promoting gender equality in sport through UNESCO, so I'd imagine both women are genuinely good people.

With very little separating them I would judge them on their medal count, which IMO would put VCB ahead of Felix. Not only has she 2 individual Olympic Golds, but also a host of other world titles.

Felix seems to be in the shape of her life right now, so if she can maintain that for the next 5 weeks, she'll be the one to beat. VCB is also coming into shape with 10.82 at the weekend at the Jamaican trials. She has produced her PB's/SB's at major championships, with the perfect example in the 200m final at the Beijing Olympics, so expect fireworks!!
