    Hi all,

Last week I was offered a position in Manchester which I've accepted. I was wondering if anyone here's lived there and if it is a good city. The position is unfortunately based in Wythenshawe hospital which is in the middle of Europe's largest social housing project and by all means a place to avoid according to Google. Any advice on where would be good and where to avoid would be great!

    Sheffield?

all depends on your budget, your commuting options - if you have a car, if you can park it near the Hospital, whether you can afford to commute or need it to be walk/bike option...

You'll have a great time, city is full of recent graduates, young professionals and has a great vibe, some of the best nightlife in the UK. Have a mate who lives there and i love going over.

In the south of manchester you've loads of options. Chorlton is great, quite trendy and young. Look for something in round that area and you can't go wrong. You have didsbury which is quite upmarket but also nice.

depends if you're into sharing, on your own or moving with someone else. You could share something in Chorlton, be near loads of cool bars/cafes etc and easy access in and out out of the city centre on the bus.

Cheers chaps. I don't have a car so I'd be relying on buses. I get 2 to get to and from work and it is a real pain.

Chorlton, Didsbury, Sale and Altrincham were areas I was looking at. I was a bit nervous as I was told it's a fairly dangerous spot.

Wythenshawe is grim alright. It's right by the airport though and there's a few industrial estates there too. If you were to live in Didsbury like you said you'd be close to wythenshawe but also to Manchester city centre and the night buses wouldn't be too bad to get home after a night out. Stockport wouldn't be too bad either except it's quiet.

Hi, my friend and I are going to Manchester at the beginning of August for five days, and we were wondering where would be a nice, central and safe area to stay , any accommodation recommendations are welcome. Also are there any good tours there?....thanks

This place is right by the train and bus station in the centre of Manchester. It's basic but clean and cheap and right by the shops and nightlife etc.

Thanks Icann, that looks like a decent sort of place and the location looks ideal, we will look further into it.:)

    Hi there,

First off I would like to apologise, it is probably bad etiquette to be resurrecting an old thread. But anyway I am moving to Manchester for work reasons at the end of April. I am hoping to live in Chorlton so I can walk to work.

I actually do not know a single person in the area so if anyone had any tips or advice, (areas to avoid, good pubs etc) they would be greatly appreciated. I am a sporty individual and would be interested in joining the local football team if anybody has any recommendations.

Also just wondering what the cost of living like in Manchester is, my salary will be decent but not huge. Have a fair bit saved for the move over and will be starting my new job pretty much straight away.

    Thanks.

Chorlton's a nice place, I'm living just down the road from it at the moment. In terms of places to avoid, there aren't very many at all. During the day, you're sound anywhere.. but I wouldn't venture into Whalley Range or Moss Side at night until you know the area better/you've really got your wits about you.

There's a few nice pubs around Chorlton. It's got quite a big Irish population, who tend to head mainly to either the Bowling Green, or Duffy's (it's not a plastic Oirish pub like it sounds!).

When you say football, do you mean Gaelic or Soccer? If it's GAA, St. Lawrence's is based in Chorlton, and there's about 3 other GAA clubs in Manchester, I think. If it's Soccer, Chorlton FC might be of interest to you.

The cost of living's similar to most of England - it's fairly cheap. 4 pints of Milk's a quid, a pint of Guinness is anywhere from £3-3.50. Rent for a flat can be anywhere from £65-120 a week in Chorlton. Manchester's definitely not expensive, though.

If there's anything I can help you with, feel free to ask.

Hi brummytom, thanks for that, really appreciate it.

I would be looking to join a soccer team, nothing too serious. Just want to join a club for the social aspect to be honest.

I may send you a PM with some other questions if you wouldnt mind please?

    Thanks again.

I live on the Whalley range/Chorlton "border" (for lack of a better term). I moved here in late Sept for a job.I would advise not to move this side of Chorlton if possible. Its not awful but the rest of Chorlton is way better.

Here you can get some cheap rent but there is alot of burglaries. There seems to be a couple of dodgy characters around every so often looking like they will try to rob a house.I had my car window smashed (nothing robbed) on the street back in Jan.

Despite this I do love the area and feel safe enough in terms of walking around after a pub and such. Haven't seen any real violence. Its a real young area average age seems to be 25-30. It is a bit hipster at times but you can live with that.

In terms of price be aware of possible added costs to living here like water charges and council tax. I found that killer at first. Also your rent deposit can be substantial depending on the letting agent/landlord.

As for the social aspect of things I was in the same boat as you. I am still working on that myself. I know a couple of people but I am planning on joining some clubs and stuff.
With work being hectic and Christmas I did nothing on that side of things up to this point to be honest

Make sure you have your national insurance number meeting booked before you move over. You need an NI number to get paid. This caught me out too. The wait can be long for an appointment. They will tell you that you need a UK address for this. A friend of mine used a hotel address before he has a house.

Feel free to ask me anything else you need. If you land in Chorlton I'd be happy to go for a pint also.

You can get paid without an NI number but you'll be emergency taxed.

Thanks Wanders Fan, that is a good idea re the hotel address for the NI number. How long did it take you to get an appointment??

I would most deffo be up for meeting for a beer, I am actually over in Manchester on Friday and Saturday trying to sort out where to live, set up bank account etc. So if you or anyone else for that matter, is around on Friday evening for a beer let me know.

I will be staying in Manchester city centre on Friday night.

Because of a mix up with HR at my job (they told me would sort it) I was waiting a while for my NI. I started work here in August so the queue was long due to international Uni students starting. I book my appointment on 7th Aug and my first available date was like 23rd Sept.

I got in before that as I rang every day for cancellations but it was a ball ache

Can't make tonight but if you around Sat I will be watching the Munster match in a pub called The Seven Oaks. If you google map it you'll find it between Princess St. and Piccadilly gardens. Call in

    Afternoon all,
Been living in Manchester for the past few months with the missus, it's all going well but dam hard to meet people to head out for a few drinks with (the work crew are extremely boring to say the least).
Would be good to grab a pint sometime soon if you are keen, living just past the Northern Quarter so anywhere in town would be good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 marbilio

Hey Wanders Fan, sorry I only saw you post after I had visited Manchester.

I ended up getting an apt in near victoria station in the city. I decided to live in the city because my contract is only 12 months so wanted to get the full experience of the city if that makes sense. I think I might be near you crushproof.

Anyway I am moving over on the 24th of April and would be up for pints sometime in May if ppl are interested. Perhaps we could have a Manchester boards night out or something.

    Hi guys.
I'm looking at moving to Manchester towards the end of July. Where would you recommend is a good suburban town to live in? I'm looking into house shares and hoping to get a place where the bills are included in the rent price and near a tram stop. What way is the job scene there? I work in customer service in a call centre at the moment and there seems to be a good bit of that type of work according to job sites. My biggest worry is wondering how much money I should have to get my self started there.

Why a suburban town in particular rather than the city?

Suburbs wise-Altrincham, Sale, Didsbury, Chorlton (more inner suburb though), Pendlebury? (basically the far western edge of Salford), parts of Stockport and parts of Bury.

Avoid Rochdale, Oldham, Bolton, inner Salford, Gorton (where Shameless was filmed) in particular-proper dumps with pretty much nothing redeeming about them.

Not necessarily, Manchester can be a bit strange like that. Living in the suburbs of Chorlton or Didsbury or Altrincham could easily work out more expensive than the city centre, even just in terms of renting.

If you're interested in the city, check out the Northern Quarter, around Oxford Road Station, Deansgate, Ancoats, New Islington, the part of Salford just over the river from Manchester and around Deansgate. There's a few to keep you going.

There's defo plenty of customer service roles, although alot of them are located in the suburbs in office parks etc. So you'd be best to look for places close to regular train/tram/bus routes.
The place I work in is mainly customer service but it's just like the above, in a far out (****ehole area) place so relying on the train is a nightmare, trains here have a tendency to cancel themselves or decide to go another direction on occasion. So somewhere on a regular route would be best.
Currently living north of the city centre, previously in a houseshare between Fallowfield and Chorlton, paying more where we are now but much nicer accommodation. Prefer living in the city now as much closer to shops, pubs etc but if you can find somewhere nice with cheap rent close to Chorlton village or Didsbury I'd go for that, they're lively areas.

Maybe check Airbnb.com for temp accommodation when arriving, we found a houseshare within a couple of days. Arriving in the summer is good as there's plenty of rooms available because there's not many students left around. Just remember that there's water bills and council tax over there as well! Council tax is the real killer!!

Hi all said I'm bump up this trend again :).
I've decided that I'm making the big move to Manchester in the middle to end of July. Anyone know if I can arrange my appointment for the National insurance number thing before I go or must I have a UK address? I may have asked this already, also as well if someone knows someone whose letting out a double room in a house share for £300pcm with bills included in the rent price I'd appreciate any help. Sound :)

    Hi folks.

Moving to Manchester for three years soon as wife is going back to Uni in Salford.

We're not bothered about living near the city but just wondering for any current recommendations. I'm inclined to dismiss didsbury and the southern recommended suburbs to avoid a long commute to Salford.

Getting from Didsbury to Salford is easy as there is now a direct bus from Didsbury Village to Salford Quays. Is it the uni that's at Media City that your wife is going to?

Nice apartments and all but the actual area is a bit dead, fair old trek to do your shopping or popping out for a pint.

I just finished my final year in Salford if your wife needs any info feel free to PM me. The area of Salford in my experience is nice to live in... perhaps a little rough around the edges but I never experienced any trouble. The journey planner on tfgm.com was invaluable for gauging journey times and routes. Traffic in Manchester is an absolute nightmare at peak times so if you drive keep that in mind!

Well we did a tour of surrounding neighbourhood and we've settled for swinton as it really suits my wifes college course but in our travels I reckon Levenshulme might be a good family option, there seemed to be a good irish presence there and it's on a good trainline.

Bit of a bump here lads but I just got a job in Manchester City Centre, due to start early November. Having a bit of a heart attack looking at all the almost costs of renting over there, application fees, credit check fees, etc

I'll be moving over with my girlfriend, we're looking at moving into the City Centre, as we want that city living feel if you get me! can anyone recommend a decent agency they've used or how exactly they went about securing accommodation?
