Amalgam or composite filling?

Just wondering what sort of filling shoud be used in a upper premolar that hasn't much left to it! Just the inside wall and half the outer remain. If the amalgam filling there now was to be replaced, would it be better to use another amalgam or could a composite material be used?

Also, could a pin be used if a composite filling were to be put in this tooth?

There are basically two types of fillings, good ones and bad ones. Composite or Amalgam can be good or bad depending on how its placed. Amalgam is a little less sensitive to moisture during placement. Pins etc are used with either to help retain the filling if needed.

Premolar teeth are difficult to fill and my recommendation would be to have a crown wheil there is still something left to crown. Given you history I would suggest a restorative specialist at this stage.

    Why??

I ended up with a pinned composite 2 weeks ago but had heard since that pins are usually not used with composites.

The filling had to be adjusted a week later, bit of drilling I think and more filling put on and the nerve is hopping ever since. :(

Well if the teeth are visible teeth when you talk or smile, the pin can can show through the composite.
Also if the pin corrodes over time, it will gradually discolour the composite
