Some interesting results such as Paul Koech once again not performing at the Kenyan Trials and could miss out on selection despite running 3rd fastest time ever this year in the Steeple. Also E Kipchoge missing out on his first major championship in 9 years.

8:36!! 25 seconds off the winner! Only a few weeks ago he nearly broke the WR. Somebody please explain this. It's getting silly at this stage!

He never performs well at Altitude. Times for longer distances are always going to be slower but some athletes dont react well especially if they have been racing in Europe for the last few months. Just hope he gets a wildcard selection as I think he will dominant E Kemboi and Kipruto in London if he gets to run

They really need to stop holding these at altitude unless the major champs is also at altitude.

Where should they hold them? Mombasa - is there even a track there? Outside Kenya - is that practical?

They hold them at an altitude that is a good bit lower than where most of their athletes train (and where they were brought up). If they go to sea level (within Kenya), the weather would be hot and humid which could affect the results even more.

Maybe if Koech didn't go to sea level to race before the trials he could have run good. He could have a mental block after a few bad races which weren't necessarily because of the altitude. It seems strange as I'm pretty sure he does his training at altitude.

Given that the 10,000m Trials were held in Eugene Oregon this year I think perhaps this is an option for distances of say 3000m SC and 5000 as well.

Ethiopia have started doing this also in their 5000 and 10000m races (though have a number of races for the selectors to take into account but Hengelo being the so called "trial race"

Ethiopia doesn't have the depth that Kenya does or the same number of unknowns coming out in any year. It's easier for them to know who to send to these trials.

If you send 45 men and 45 women abroad to do these races, it starts getting expensive. It also takes the sport away from its roots. I saw a picture from the 5k and it looked like the stadium was pretty full. It'd be a bad move to move them in my opinion. Only Koech seems to have a problem and someone would probably complain about the travel if they brought them somewhere else.

I'd say next year the AAI should ask to hold the Kenyan 5k in santry :).

They'd probably block a few entrants or something though.

Read the book Running with Kenyans and you will get a feel for the whole situation there, the number of amazing runners etc!
