    How's it going lads.

As the header says my mbp is stuck in sleep mode. It's happened a few times before and usually I'd just remove the battery and hey presto, it would come back on.

This time however it's not responding. I shut it down as normal last night but today it won't respond. The keyboard is not working at all, I tried pressing the caps lock button to see if the back light came on but nothing.

I've tried pressing the back light button, but again nothing.

The fan is slightly humming when it's on. But there's no reaction what so ever.

Any ideas? I read something about a logic board. If it is that, would it be an expensive fix?

When this happens, instead of removing the battery, press and hold the power button to force a shutdown.

Have you made any hardware changes? New RAM, etc? Do you have anything hooked up to the machine?

I've held the power button to shut it down but once I go to turn it on its the same thing again.

I haven't made any hardware changes ever to it. It's just used as my Internet browsing computer, I don't need it for work or anything and it's always left at home

As far as things hooked up to it. Only the charger as the battery has been gone for 2 years

I have to admit I'm bloody disgusted by this. It's a 2500 euro computer yet it has the same issues as a e500 pc. It's been running really slowly for 6 months now, taking an age to start up. And this black screen thing has been happening a bit as well. When you spend that kind of money you expect something to last a while

What do you mean by "won't respond"? Please describe exactly what you see and hear after you press the power button to start it from off.

As you say the battery "has been gone" (you mean it won't hold charge?) I'd suspect this is the main cause of your problems and you should replace it ASAP. For the moment, try running the computer with no battery connected. You really shouldn't expect a laptop to run faultlessly with a faulty battery.

Try doing a PRAM reset. CMD + alt/option + P + R. Just boot your laptop holding those keys.

Why wouldn't you buy a new battery? I think it's stupid for a person to buy a €2500 laptop, and not replace the battery when it breaks.

You might have fried the motherboard when running on the charging cable. An unnecessary shutdown (i.e. charging cable falling off) could cause this. OR you might have a corrupted HDD, also cause by an unnecessary shutdown. If it's the motherboard/ logic board fault, you'd be looking at buying a new laptop, it'd make more financial sense than repairing it. And if it's a HDD issue, it would be around €100 for a decent replacement HDD, but i'd recommend re-formatting your current HDD first and reinstalling OSX. It could fix it. If it does, don't be a cheap ass, and just buy a replacement battery. :)

Nothing with the reboot. I'm going to drop it into evad tomorrow. If the fix costs anything than 400 euro ill have to forget about it. It's just too costly

    Fingers crossed its something small

Why didn't you get on to apple when the battery went ?
Its 2009 computer and battery gone 2 years. If you were winthin warranty they would have replaced it. Even out fo warranty they may ahve replaced it.
Did you not get Applecare with the machine ? If you did could still be covered depending when in 09 you got it

I bought it second hand. It was a few months old when I bought it

Odds are if you paid 2500 for it second hand - or even if thats waht the other guy paid for it - he may have got the apple care.

Could be worth a call to find out.

I assume the previous owner would have told him if he had AppleCare. In any case, you can check online:

Nope, no apple care. I'll try and get into evad tomorrow and see what the prognosis is.

    Ah well worth a shot.
    I hope they can help!

    Yep, it's fecked.

The logic board is gone. The technician in evad reckons it's not worth doing. Between the logic board, a new battery and a new charger I'd be paying close to a grand. So that's a new laptop for me so

No more apples in afraid. I've had ipods and iphones break and now this. So its back to a good old fashioned pc for me

You are acting like the machine was a week old. From the sounds of it, it was a late 2008 or early 2009 MBP, making it between 3 and half to 4 years old, possibly older if the seller misled you as to when he purchased it. It's bad luck, but the remaining life of any computer falls into question after 3 years. If you think logic boards only fail on Macs then you are mistaken. And as already said, it's possible you caused logic board damage by pulling the battery out.

Well. In my experience over the years mac's are far superior to other brands.

Notable mention to IBM thinkpads however that I used at an old job, which are now made by Lenovo.
