Thinking of buying a second hand Golf.
Is there really that much difference between 1.4 and 1.6?
    MPG?

The 1.6 8v in the Mk4 was actually an ok engine, compared to the 1.4 16v at least.

wasn't aware of that :) just thought if i wanted an unreliable 1.6 hatch i'd rather have an alfa 147 or something :pac:

Which year/model are you looking at? As mentioned above, if its a MK4 then there are numerous better options out there. But if you must buy a petrol MK4 golf then the 1.6 8v will be the more reliable option then the 1.4 or 1.6 16v versions.

    i drive a MK4 1.4 2003 Golf. Costs about E86 to fill

Local driving about 460 miles per tank
Motorway - long trips 500 miles per tank thats about 800KM

I'm getting better economy from my 1.6 than my 1.4 focus. A barely noticable difference in tax, if it bothers you. There's a nice 01 gti golf on donedeal for 2k. I would snap it up if I was in the market now.

I'm choosing between these two atm, is the 1.4 much worse on fuel? And is it as bad as people make out? :s it would have cheaper tax and insurance. 1.6 are more powerful but not as abundant as the 1.4 so harder to get a good deal for one.

Even if you don't care about performance, the 1.4 in the Mk4 Golf is spectacularly unreliable. Don't buy one. If you must have a 1.4, get an Astra or Corolla instead. But if you can stretch to a 1.6, the Focus is the best by a mile.

I have a 1998 1.6 golf up for sale at the moment and it's done 197,000 miles with very little trouble!
