Their operation is huge! Considering they operate so many routes in so many countries...there is your answer.

As regards the winter, they do not "ground" as many aircraft as they might like you to think- they generally operate much reduced schedules so the aircraft is still active just not as it could be (e.g it might not start until 10am and be finished again at 8pm)

Some were parked at dublin, shannon, stanstead, etc and were used in rotations so they wouldnt be sitting there for too long.

As for now, all planes are kept were they are based or at various maintenance locations if getting worked on.

Does anyone know what airlines policy usually is as to having spare aircraft available to a certain extent? I would imagine when you have a fleet of 300 it would be a good idea to have a few spares floating through Europe so that there are options should one go tech... Also, it'd be handy for cashing in on non-normal occassions such as the Euros. Ryanair had extra capacity for that and I'm sure the tickets weren't cheap.

Also, you hear O'Leary say "this winter we'll have 80 parked up..." I'll take him serious when he says "this summer we'll have 80 parked up...". Of course you're going to have some parked up, it's the focking winter sure...

Yes you would have spare aircraft if one or two goes tech. Aer Lingus Regional has one spare atr 42 for a replacement if one goes tech, and they have aroubd 10-11 aircraft. I wouldnt know how many Ryanair would have.

As for parking up to 80 aircraft.. Before I think Ryanair used them all but due to price of fuel, low winter loads, etc they parked them up and used them in rotations as I said.

According to Flight Internationals recent Airline survey RYR have 291 B737-8 series with a further 18 on order.
    8,069 employees too.

The 18 on order is out-dated and incorrect. They received all aircraft I believe

Plus they would have way more employed

I think they still have a few to be delivered. Then no more on order, considering the current B737/A320 backlog they may not have no aircraft for quite a few years. However their average aircraft age is very low so no immediate need to get new units.

(Jethros.co.uk shows 294 B738's as of May 31st, with 13 due as of April 28th 2012. Those 13 may well have already arrived by now)

FR outtsource so much of their operation that employee numbers is not an accurate term. Many of their flight crew and cabin crew are officially non-company staff. They are directly employed by subsidiary companies who exclusively provide contract staff to Ryanair.

Don't have the exact dilevery dates but 13 are still due which will start arriving from September.

There was 10-15 parked at BHX last winter and as already said they were changed around and maintance carried out on them.

Why must Ryanair hire aircraft this summer?
They have a big enough fleet and have reduced a lot of routes. Doesn't make much sense to me

They've expanded a lot, tbh. Is there a date for when the 734s will start flying for them?

No idea to be honest. I was booking a flight and seen it was being operated by another company. I did not think Ryanair would be in a position to spend money leasing aircraft. Seems like a waste.
Would be good to see them break new ground with flights from Dublin to US or Russia or more far flung destinations in North Africa

They've increased frequency and added a lot of routes too to be honest.

    That's easier said than done.

I think it's June 16, don't quote me on that though.

Darn it. Booked a flight with them the week before that, was hoping I might get to see one while I was in the airport. Thanks!
