FAULT: Colour Distortion on Philips LCD TV

    Hi

We have a Philips LCD TV.
    Model 32PFL5403D/10
    Serial VN2C0829020801

However, we have a problem with this television. Sometimes this problem is unnoticeable, possibly non existent. Sometimes the problem is extremely bad and makes TV watching almost impossible.

The fault is basically with the picture. The colours in the picture become distorted. It is most noticeable in two instances:
    1. On human faces
    2. On large areas of solid colour (e.g. a blue sky, or a green football pitch).

What is happening is that the colours become quite pastel-like, and sometimes other colours will show where they shouldn't. For example, redish, or bright white colours will appear in human faces, or in a black night sky.

The best comparison I can think of is if you have ever seen the Keanu Reeves movie A Scanner Darkly, it has a very distinctive animation style. If you Google it, you will see still images of scenes from the film.

The problem with our TV makes the picture look extremely like the film A Scanner Darkly, particularly human faces.

We have tried to play around with the scart and HDMI connections but this has not been successful. The problem is occuring via more than one scart connection and more than one HDMI cable coming from more than one source (both a DVD player and a sky box).

Thank you very much for any help you can provide

Is the TV running the latest firmware?

    http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?slg=en&scy=se&ctn=32PFL5403D/10

The readme file on the page will show you how to check and also show you the changes made in prior firmware updates. This would be the first check and update you should do.

Hopefully its as simple as this. :)

    Hi there EddieM

I tried this twice and both times it gave me the following message:

INVALID FIRMWARE! BAD CHECKSUM OR BAD SIGNATURE

I have rechecked the model number and it is as I gave it earlier, and I have rechecked the philips website to check that this is the correct software update and it is.

So now I really do not know what to do.

The tv still appears to be working as was (with the colour problems).

But, for some reason it wont take this firmware upgrade.

Please help us if you can?
    Thanks

Ok have you confirmed the following:

    USB

    - USB is empty with 256MB of free space.
    - USB flash drive must be FAT or DOS-formatted, and have its write protection disabled.
    - Is not a USB hard drive.

    Software

    - Did you download the English version - 32pfl5403d_10_fus_eng.zip
    - Did you extract ‘autorun.upg’ to the root directory of the USB flash drive.

If you have done all the above I would suggest contacting Philips TV Support directly. The below link is to the Irish page, sometimes there is a live chat option or if you hit the Contact Philips at the bottom of the page this will provide you the phone number, email, etc...

    Best of luck !

I had a Philips tv for 2 years when I had a similar issue. Googled it and it wasn't a rare problem.
It was a hardware issue with the tv, not a firmware or software problem.
After several attempts by the service company to fix it, I gave up and replaced the tv(for free).Theres a thread in consumer affairs about it somewhere.
Bring it back to where you bought it and let them have a look.
