    Hi guys,
I'm thinking of heading to Samoa or Tonga in October for a week or two and was wondering if anyone here has experience of either? There seems to be a lot of negativity on thorntree about Samoa in terms of packs of wild dogs and rampant theft from tourists. Which I'm not wildly excited about.
So personally I'd be going for Tonga I think, but one of my friends who's travelling with me has Samoa in her head. How can I discourage her? (Or am I completely wrong and it's a fabulous place?
    Thanks!

Haven't been to Tonga but spent a week in Samoa last year, and LOVED it. Gorgeous weather, beautiful beaches, really friendly people, etc. The main"city" Apia is a bit of a hole but I rented a car and just drove around the coast for a few days. Scenery is beautiful and you can stay in beach fales quite cheaply.
It's a cultural eye-opener too ... Samoans (like most Pacific islanders) are really laid-back, quite religious, very proud people. I found them quite shy to begin with (esp the women) but very friendly. Aspects of life there reminded me of Ireland back in the day... no drink-driving laws or underage drinking laws (or at least not enforced), also very common to see about 10 kids hanging out of a car (no seatbelt or maximum capacity laws!).
Just google samoa tourism and you'll find their official website easily enough. To be honest I'd say Tonga isnt all that different, either way I'm sure you'll have a ball! Enjoy!

Thanks Sadhbh. Was it just a matter of driving around and booking accommodation as you went when you found a spot you fancied? Or did you need to book anything much ahead of time?
