Got a 42" Sony and the volume goes from 1 to 100. When I first bought it 18 months ago 30-40 was adequate. Tonight I have it at 100 at I can barely hear the volume from it.

Any ideas about what I can do about this , its been years since I've seen a TV repair shop about, do they even exist anymore. If so is it typically going to cost me way more for new speakers and installation than what the tv itself might be worth (cost me €499 at the time, probably now worth €200).

Or could buying external speakers be a solution?

Sony only started making 42" sets this year. Which model is it? Have you connected something new to the set recently? It may not be a fault.

Try the Sony dealer you bought it off. There are Sony repair centres around the country and they may know straight away if the set is worth fixing or not if it is a fault.

what signal are you using? saorview box? or analogue direct to tv . .

the volume on the box may be set low.

Sorry it is a 40 inch not 42.

There is a scart to scart from the UPC cable box going into the TV. I tightened the scart connections and had no change.

As far as I know there is no volume setting on the UPC box, I'm pretty sure it is the tv though and not any other box. My reasoning for this that that I have noticed the volume getting progressively worse over the last 3-4 months.

    Any ideas ?

    try another scart lead.

I tried a different Scart today but unfortunately that isn't the problem

Watching the football at the moment and the volume is set to max (100) but we can only just about hear it.

Do you have anything else, like a DVD player or Games Console you can connect up to the TV?

That could help work out if it's the TV or the UPC box which is causing the problem.

I'm sure old UPC boxes had their own volume control. Don't know if this is still the case, but it's worth double-checking.

The other thing worth checking is if the TV has a "Late Night" volume setting that may have been accidentally turned on. This setting exists on some TVs to limit the volume for late-night viewing to avoid upsetting the neighbours.

Press the volume up button on the UPC remote control?

Don't have a DVD to test it unfortunately.

I rang UPC yesterday and she got me to turn the volume fully down with the TV remote and then fully up with the UPC one. That didn't work. Then we tried again but with the TV starting at level 50 of 100.

That didn't work either so an engineer is coming on Thursday morning. I hope it is the box and not the TV as it is slightly out of warranty :o

But at the same time if he has to replace the box I'm going to lose 30 odd hours of programmes I want to keep. Another engineer had told me that there is a USB slot but that it isn't enabled. I don't suppose there is a way to enable it ?

Thanks for all the help so far, hopefully I'll have this sorted for the football final on Sunday :)
