Don't know whether this is the proper forum but couldn't find a suitable place.

I recently bought a Sony blu-ray player which has a usb port on the front. If I download blu-rays quality films and put them onto a Usb stick and put the stick into the usb port on the blu-ray will I have blu-ray quality?

If you have a blu-ray quality film it will be blu-ray quality wherever you play it provided you have the proper HD display and HD connections.

It may not be playable on all devices depending on format.

The file will be .mkv and if the player can play it it will be blu ray quality if the are well made rips. See if the player plays .mkv files and try.

Would the ps3 be a similar story?

Which Sony blu-ray is it? If it is on your network you could stream it over that to your player instead of caring about USBs and format support.

For me, download quality is still not as good as blu-ray.

How would I go about streaming?

Check if your player supports DLNA. If it does, download the software from sony.co.uk/homestream and tell the software where you music/photo/video is. The media will then appear on the menu of your player if your PC and player are on the same network.

depending on how recent you bought your player and whether the firmware has been updated, the player could have the Cinavia content protection update on it.

The average size of blu ray content on the disc is 25GB to 50GB depending on the title.

If your download is around that size , then it might be Blu ray quality , if not , and it most likely is not , then a large percentage of the content has been thrown away during the rip and it will not be blu ray quality. Illegal content never is.

The only way to guarantee blu ray quality is to rip your own discs in ISO format , the file size will be huge , but there will be no difference between it and your original content.
