    I have a GSP
I like them for their intelligence and how quickly they bocome one of the family.
Also they/mine will retrieve from land and water.

I don't like how headstrong they are.

Had a GWP, fantastic dog to watch working, always loved to see her go on point, currently have a 10week old springer who is starting to show good signs of being a clever dog, went with a springer because the GWP wouldn't retrieve from water, no mater how hard I tried!

have to agree with glensman about the headstrong part they would definetly test u once in a while the gsp,but when things go right with them they are a joy.....but ill never regret moving to the spaniel .absolute natural hunter and retriever .

Has to be an English Springer Spaniel, that said I have a golden retriever as a pet and did a small bit of work with her for the crack. She will happily go into rough ground and water, as much as the springer, to retrieve but does not have the same stamina. I was however surprised by how good she was especially as she was got just to be a pet, she has a good nose and is clever. Just goes to show that you can be lucky but it is hard to beat the springer.

It's a very hard question to just pick one & you'll always be influenced by the personality of a particular good dog you may of had.

If id to pick one on appearance I'd say a Gordon Setter. Reckon I'll go far a field some day & bring back a few & breed em.

If I was to go for all round shooting you can't beat a good springer.

If I was after personality & brains then I've had good experiences with the EPs. Train them & let em off to do the rest bar shoot!

If only I could win the lotto & have loads of time off to hunt all different types :)

@ Alchemist - the bitch is mad as a bag of cats! Seen nothing like her! If she has a nose which I'll test come season & I can reign her in then we'll have a dog on our hands but a challenge it will be! You could be taking on more than you want to chew :D

well my preference for an all rounder is the springer. for a pointer i like the gsp or english. though id like to try a brittany some day

Had a Brittany mad as a brush used to jump 6 foot wall out the back garden
    Was nuts
Kinda regret never puttin more time into Training him as I've seen videos of them working and they look excellent
But I suppose gundogs can be great or bad
I'd still go for German shorthair anyday tho I would like to try a Hungarian vizsla one day

are they the brother's dogs in the second picture? do you have any clearer pictures of the english setter? smashing looking dog's though. i believe those gordons are hard work. i was chatting to a lad recently who said he had to get rid of one as it ate it's way through the wooden door of the shed it was sleeping in and apparently chewed a hole in his fathers fishing dingy.

Yea i see there used in the states quite alot, supposed to be fine working dogs alright.Just love to see a game fair and you stroll in with a lovely white poodle and smash all the other dogs LMFAO would be a fine day alright

    Yeah thats 2 of them.
The younger English setter isn't there though. The english setter in the picture is getting old now(12 I think) and should be dead so many times you wouldn't believe.
As regards the Gordon, the brother never had any trouble with him I don't think.

just got a new gsp on sat, the lad on the left is the one i went for, have been shoooting over a cocker for the last 7/8 year and have to say he was a little demon, but he's retired now and looking forward to getting this lad up and running, have never trained a gsp so hope i don't make a whoor out of him and vice versa!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,008 ✭✭✭TriggerPL

It a hard one to ans as e pointer said ! If I only had room for one dog I'd pick my ess.
But there nothing nicer that walking a Feild with lab at heel and English pointer working out in front ! Popping out the occasional woodcock with the lab ! That been said the Gordon setter is the nicest gundog to watch IMO . And the dog I'd like to own at some stage is a chessie .

Nice thread to read tho !

Haven't abreeze about hunting but all my family hunt and we've always kept German pointers. As well as being good hunting dogs, they are loyal loving family dogs. Might be important to your missus and kids is you have any.

It's very important with the Missus and baby that the dog is good and from pointers I had in the past they are just so relaxed and not one bit aggressive

The red dogs will do everything that is required of a gundog.

    scaled.php?server=256&filename=bild10z.jpg&res=landing

    German Wirehair.
Excellent retrievers, land and water. Will work heavy cover and has enough range for open fields and moorland.
Wires are house dogs at heart, gentle with children, but will adjust to life in the kennel if need be.

i use a red setter out front and my old buddy the golden retriever walks to heel its an unusual combo but thats why i like it,
if i could have any dogs it would be the uncles two cocker/springer crosses 2 little deamons but the best crack to be out with
