Saorview box and MMDS aerial

I live in North County Dublin and I have UPC MMDS.

The MMDS aerial on the roof has the "dish" part aimed towards The Naul where the MMDS transmitter is located and another arm which is aimed southwards, I presume towards the Dublin mountains.

The cable coming down from the roof goes into the living room and is then split with one cable going into the MMDS box and the other cable going into the dining room to a small TV there. This TV can only show the Irish stations. The October 24 graphic shows up on this TV.

I bought a Saorview box and connected it to the TV in the dining room but after going through the installation process it cannot detect any stations.

Is the aerial on the roof incompatible with the Saorview box? I have all the connections set up as per the instruction manual so the problem isn't with the setup.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need a UHF aerial to pick up Saorview, your MMDS aerial won't pick up the signal

    Have a look here http://www.saorview.ie/make-the-switch/step-2-check-aerial/

Thanks Extinction. I thought that because I was getting a signal from the Irish stations and the 24 October graphic was displaying on the screen, the aerial would have been compatible.

Looks like I have to get a new aerial as well.

What is TG4 reception like on this tv? (should be in the terrestrial forum btw)

Sorry about the wrong location. Maybe a mod could move it?

The TG4 reception is very poor on this TV. RTE1 & RTE2 are ok and TV3 is not as good as the RTE stations. TG4 can't be viewed as the picture is too bad.

The Saorview transmissions from Three Rock/Kippure are in the same frequency group as analogue TG4 from these transmitters, so any difficulties there wouldn't bode well for Saorview reception.

Might be worth your while posting a pic of the aerial (the part pointing to the mountains).

Analogue RTÉ/TV3 from Three Rock are in the lower part of the band and analogue TG4 and Saorview are in the upper part, maybe the aerial you have (Group A?) doesn't cover the part of the band for TG4 and Saorview, Group C/D UHF aerial required.

Either way....The MMDS aerial needs to be "powered up".

There is a seperate power supply that comes with the box which has an outlet for the box,and one back to the aerial to give it power.

But,,as already expained,it won't work for saorview anyway.

    Folks

Many thanks for all the replies so far. As requested, here is a photo of my mmds aerial. The mesh part is pointed northwest towards the Naul while the other part is aimed south towards the Dublin mountains.

Sorry about the size of the photo. I looked up how to post a picture but it didn't say how to make it smaller.

Well, that's definitely a UHF aerial in the photo, no colour coding visible so can't be sure which group. The elements look fairly long, so it could be group A.

Saorview requires group CD or wideband.

Best to get a professional Saorview Aerial install. Make sure first you live in an area with coverage:

Seems Three Rock is changing to UHF channel 30 on July 10th, so the OP here should hold off doing anything until then.
