I'm sure there's tonnes of apps that record speed, distance, climbs etc using the iPhone's gps feature.

    What's the best free one?

I find cyclemeter the best, for my own personal logs anyway, and it full of great features.
but for the best of both worlds you can export your rides to strava from cyclemeter so you
can share and compare with others too.

I used to have a Nokia phone and used sport tracker. It's a free app on the iPhone. It links with their website and thus picked up all my old data. To be honest though you'll forever worry about battery drain unless you buy a garmin edge or similar.

Use everytrail on bike and offroading. Main reason is you can see your actual elevation... Something that seems to be missing on the others.

Don't like run keeper at all.. And the amount of spam they send is a PITA.

When you say garmin, due you carry a Sat nav or is it a specific bike odometer/speedometer?

Its triathlon watch model so it has a bike mode which has various displays such as speed, distance altitude etc. It can be bike mounted or wrist mounted and you can add other sensors to it like cadence.

I dont get much email form Runkeeper and its easy to turn off the alerts and list subscription. I could upload the garmin files to runkeeper as well, instead of using their app.

I use Endomondo on Android, seems pretty good, seems o tick most of the boxes mentioned above. Battery life seems pretty good using it also. A three hour cycle uses less than 1/4 of my battery. I think you can connect it to cadence sensors and hear rate monitors also, I dont have these so I cant say for sure if it works

I just put sports tracker on my Nokia e5, and the battery life on the phone has gone to hell. About an hour after the session the battery is nearly flat and won't re-charge fully. I am thinking of taking it off the phoe and putting it on an i-touch or similar or else spending money I don't have on a garmin. I use the phone for work, so I cannot afford for it to be flattened like that.
