Start playing the game Easter weekend and since then have been out at least once a week some weeks up to 3 times .

Bought a set of Dunlop clubs , a cheap set (135) just to get me started . But have got a loan of Slazanger irons/woods , they are a mix of the two for anyone not familer with these , they are just bigger club so my thinking was they would be easier to hit with .

I play of 28 and have not broken 20 points yet , I know terrible scoring but I probley scratch 6-9 holes around .

My problem is I'm playing this amount of time but I'm still scuffing or topping a shot a hole . Im starting to notice I'm falling behind friends that started playing the game the same time as me .

My question really is lads , how long were you lads playing before you were striking the ball cleanly all the time ?? And after 4 months of playing what sort of points were you scoring ??

Sorry about the long post lads 😊it's just I love the game but lately I'm getting very frustrated and thinking I'm going backwards .

Thanks for listening lads , really needed to get that off my chest 😄

Best piece of advice is to organise some lessons for yourself.

Yeah I was thinking this myself , cause Im obviously doing something wrong and might need a pro to take a look

Best advice is always to go get a lesson from a pro, he'll set you up on the right track and give you homework to practice at the range.

Then it's just practice practice practice.

Keep an eye out on the deal sites as there are some great lessons available there.

The most important thing is always to enjoy the game though. Go out and have fun and forget about trying to score high for the time being.

Treat every round as a practice round and you'll learn something new each time you play.

If you can try make it out to the boards outing next week. Everyone there will be happy to help you all day long.

Best piece of advice I could give you would probably be have your setup perfect.
You might not be playing long but there is no reason why you can't have as good a set up as any pro. Learn the right grip, posture, alignment, weight placement and anything else you do before you start your swing.
Getting this right will set you on the right track to do good things and naturally aid you to create good angles.
Getting comfortable with good fundamentals will improve your game much quicker and stand you in good stead long term.

Totally agree with ya. I had totally got comfortable in what I was doing of late and my game has suffered. So two days on the range was all about posture and alignment and getting the basics correct.

I was still in your position after 8/9 months with me it really dug in after i got my handicap. What has turned it around for me has been little and often. I travel a lot in my work which had me home late a fair bit. So I often only got out at the weekend, tbh I was moaning about that when I could have done something about it. I put my 3 wood 6 iron and wedge in the boot and hit 25 balls a day at whatever range I could.
No one on the tour is looking over their shoulder at me or anything but my golf is night and day better.
2 tips id give are grip and posture. Working on them have improved my game beyond recognition.

Played my best round of golf today . Scored 23 which I'm delighted with and it was enough to win out 3 ball .

Took my time over every shot , was very happy with how I was striking the ball . Made a few silly mistakes and scuffed a few shots but alot less then normal ðŸ˜႒.

And I finally joined the birdie club today , scratched 3 from the last 4 holes which took some of the gloss off my round .

But a happy golfer tonight 😊 thanks for the advice lads

It's pretty clear you love the game and have a passion to improve.

It's been said already but getting some lessons will improve things more than you will believe. It seems you're not playing too long so bad habits will be easy enough to get rid off.

Get a lesson and work on one thing as often as you can. When you have that somewhat in control, even if it takes weeks, then go back for lesson two and repeat and repeat.

I'd almost guarantee results and you coming down in shots.

I use Michelle in Celbridge and I find her excellent.

You think you're hooked now, imagine how you'll feel shooting 36 points off a much lower handicap?

Yeah I agree with everything you say Lawman . I'm away next weekend so will be booking a lesson as soon as I get back .

Iv stopped playing ball this year and have really taking to the golf so it's a sport I hope to be playing for the next 20+ years so I'll do whatever it takes to improve .

Today was the first time I didn't lose the head and get frustrated when I would hit a bad shot , and I felt this really helped me today as I almost always hit well the next shot , it's only a little change I know but when my head goes it goes and I'm scratching every hole

I started playing when I was quite young so I don't really remember how long it took to start to become decent. I guess it took over a year until I could hit the ball cleanly without topping it or duffing it and even then I probably still had quite a lot of bad shots.

It's not an easy game to master and some people take to it quicker than others.

The best advice I have is to spend much more time practising than playing........it's lonely but you'll reap the rewards.
