AVG won't update???

    Hi

My problem is 3-fold, but I put it under the heading "AVG won't update", so bear with me.

    1. I am trying to update AVG 2011, but I am getting a "General Error" message each time. It's telling me that my Anti Virus/Anti Spyare are out-dated.

    2. I also got a message the other day saying that my Adobe Reader will not work.

    3. I am getting a recurring message in relation to something called Visual Basic C++ 2005 asking me to install updates, but this fails each time I try???

The AVG is my main worry, as I don't want to do anything on my pc without this working.

    Any advice/help would be appreciated.

Well seeing that the pc won't install updates it could be an issue with the msiinstaller I think support.microsoft.com will have a few results for that (as there are different steps to resolve it).

If all else fails I think you should get rid of AVG to be honest! But that's my two...

EDIT: Actually.....just had a brainfart....if you can double click on .exe files (like setups) and they run then there's a chance that the msiinstaller is grand.

Also if you're removing or fixing any issues it'd help to run in safe mode (tapping F8 when you're booting up)....choose Safe Mode with Networking.

Confused much:confused:. You're talking to someone who just uses their pc for general browsing............I'm a complete technophobe.

    Ah, um....sorry about that!

If you download say malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org), does it launch the setup when you double click on the file? If it does then there wouldn't really be an issue with the installer.

Wouldn't do any harm to do this anyway, let it update and run a scan.

Just the fact that you're getting errors about avg updating and also windows updating led me to believe that this may be the case.

Go to Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs (Programs in windows 7) and uninstall AVG from there.
    Then restart your computer.
Then do the Disk Cleanup (right-click C drive in My Computer --> Properties --> Tools).
Download and install AVG 2012 (http://free.avg.com/ie-en/free-antivirus-download).

I understand you might have paid version of 2011 but it doesn't hurt to try 2012 version.

You can try the same procedure with Adobe - the newest version is found here:
    http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/
just tick off the box "Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus" before downloading.

Every time you uninstall or re-install something, always do RESTART between.

Thanks freestyla. I'm also continuously getting a message in my system tray telling me that there is an update available called Microsoft C++ 2005, but every time i try to install it, it keeps telling about available updates.......this pops up every 10-15 minutes.

Uninstall C++ too from the Programs ^^ and restart.

Then download new fresh package and install it:
    Depends on your windows version..
    32-bit
    OR
    64-bit

Don't think you need to update C++ really unless some specific app demands it..?

So you can get rid of annoying notifications:
Right click Windows Task bar --> Properties --> Customize... in Notification area --> there you maybe find C++ and can select not to show noticifications.

I ended up getting myself a new laptop!!! My desktop is 6 years old, so that's probably part of the problem too....?
