Road shoes with MTB Cleats

Just wondering if you have MTB pedals on your road bike and have road shoes, can you fix MTB cleats to the shoes to use with the pedals. The shoes have 3 holes and then 2 seperate holes aswell thus I presume you can use either road pedal cleats or MTB cleats and how reliable durable would the MTB cleats be on the road shoes?

If the shoes have holes for 2-bolt mounting then you could probably fit mtb cleats to them. You'd have some fun trying to walk in them though

You cannot use MTB cleats unless you have MTB holes. You can't use two of the three holes as the spacing is different.

Some shoes have both types of hole, like this.

Funnier than your average roadie clopping through a Centra?

Billyhead, if you want you can get a plastic surround yoke for road shoes + mtb cleats, but judging by the availability there isn't much demand for it.

They're only for shoes with BOTH bolt patterns. They don't convert three holes to two holes.

He has indicated he has holes for 3 bolt and two bolt pedals. (but yeah, they don't work with all road shoes, but they will with his)
And yes, I'm aware that the plastic surrounds aren't adapters. (despite shimano calling them that)
It's why I called them surrounds rather than adapters or converters.
    :p:D

    Ah, you're right. I didn't see that.

On a related subject, whoever in Shimano decided to call their road system SPD-SL needs to be shot.

Yes, it's clumsy and it's confusing for people making their way into clipless pedals. (Although the term clipless pedals is a bit of a mindwarp too...)

Billyhead - herself has road shoes with the 3hole and 2hole cleat options - she uses Shimano mtb multi release cleats and pedals. May not be the ultimate roadie setup but tis fine for fitness/leisure/charity cycle stuff. You probably wouldn't need the multi release cleats unless you had delicate knees/ankles or you were very nervous about the clipping out.

I use MTB shoes and Time ATAC mtb pedals for both my bikes. (cos I'm odd like that)
