Milton, WA, repeals helmet law - cos it can't afford to have it on the books

A Friday one for you - the tiny town of Milton, Washington, has repealed its municipal law on helmet use, as it can't afford to police the law, nor pay out in the event of a lawsuit

"...an inability to enforce a law on the books, the town’s insurance consultant argued, created administrative unevenness that — in the event of an accident by someone who was not nagged or cited about helmet use — posed a liability risk that could bankrupt the community with one swipe from a punitive-minded jury."

It's a slant on the Great Helmet Debate I haven't seen before :) Link to story here. What say ye?

Always though Milton was a bit of a sterile place myself ...

Am I right in understanding that they were afraid some helmetless cyclist would injure their head and then sue because the police hadn't stopped them?

America's litigious culture has gotten so far out of control it's actually imploding on itself!

Has anyone brought this to the attention of Matt Cooper?

He was more than a bit taken aback when first Andrew Montague and then myself said we didn't wear helmets.

Wish I'd seen that - in the past the good Mr. Cooper has descended into some pretty puerile tabloid journalism in the name of promoting helmets.
