Dunbar is beating Robert Karlsson in the quarter finals, 2 up thru 13

This is being played in Royal Troon

I'd love to see another Irish amateur win the Irish Open

Such a massive prize, hopefully he can do the business.

US Open, The Open and Masters.

Karlsson was the highest ranked player left

Highlights on sky sports for anyone who is interested, hopefully Dunbar can do the business - really good prospect for Irish golf - http://www.randa.org/en/RandA/News/News/2012/June/The-Amateur-Sky-Sports.aspx

Expected more from Daan Huizing, lost on the 19th in the first round, that's matchplay

Didn't know the winner got entry to all those tournaments. Really big day for Dunbar.

The Open and US Open are automoatic I think and the Masters always extend an invite to the Amatuer Champion. McIlhenny got it a few years ago

1 up thru 5 in Semi Final

How come alot of these big amateur championships are decided by matchplay rather than consecutive days of stroke play like the pro championships?

Granted matchplay is a good and interesting format which brings it's own strategy but as a decider for such a major championship it seems somewhat unfair. One less than perfect round or a match against an opponent on a heater and you're eliminated while in stroke play you've a chance to recover and consistency is rewarded with the person shooting the best scores winning.

Think you answered your own question. You need 2 very good rounds to qualify then need to be consistant over the next 4 days. It rewards someone playing very well.

Saying that you could come out the better side of a poor game.

    2 up now

Matchplay is what golf's all about. There isn't enough of it. It died out a little as demands on time became more.

To be honest they could do with returning the USPGA to matchplay to give it some identity.

Surely singles matchplay is a quicker game than stroke play? If you beat someone well the match can be over on the 15th or before and at the very amateurish amateur level if you mess up a hole you can just concede and continue on to the next.
My point however was that at the higher levels you can be unlucky and be up against someone who shoots a 64 while you shoot an amazing 65 and get eliminated while other matches could be won with rounds in the 70s. As such it may not necessarily be always the best two players in the final.

Dunbar holed a 2 footer for the win. Fair play to him. That is a terrific result for the man.
Hopefully a sign of bigger and better thing to come for him.

Some result and some prize. Does he get to play in this year's Open or are the invites for 2013. Either way it's some experience and opportunity.
