    Folks Question for ye,
Just been to the garage and they say the rack and pinion needs to be replaced (power steering is gone), its €1,000 for a new one plus labour, now the y will fit a second hand one but I'm thinking i will just drive the car for a bit and trade it in. Can you safely drive the car for an extended period with the rack and pinion gone. Can you do more damage to the car?

What car is it? I had a problem with my mkiv golf where the grommit on the rack was leaking fluid. I sourced a second hand one relatively cheap for I think around €120, but until I got it replaced I had to keep topping up the powersteering reservoir. If you let this run low you could damage the pump, but I was only doing short runs. I wouldn't drive it without topping up the fluid on an ongoing basis.

I wouldn't drive it much. Depending on what's wrong with it, drive it home or to a different garage and get it fixed, but do it slowly and carefully. I certainly wouldn't be heading off down the motorway at full tilt.

In summary, I would be more worried about the damage to yourself or others rather than the additional damage to the car itself if you continue to drive it.

Is it the Power Assist (PAS), or the rack? You could drive the car without the power assistance, unpleasant and probably damaging the PAS pump (more cost to repair) but do-able.

Personally, I wouldn't - the PAS is a safety feature - if you have a blow out at speed you can control the car with the PAS.

If it's the rack that's worn out - DON'T DRIVE IT - you'll probably kill someone, or your self. If the rack fails you lose steering. Imagine a sharp bend with car coming the other way and the steering wheel turns, but the car doesn't.

Get it sorted, anything else leaves you exposed to bad stuff.
