NCB protection and claims - my experience.

There were few threads about it, and different stories were presented, generally saying that when you have NCB protection and have a claim, then you have to stay with your insurer, which is most likely to increase your premium anyway.

My experience is not that bad. I'm insured with Allianz.

My insurance was due renewal in mid July 2011. In mid June 2011 I got a letter with renewal premium. I tried to put all my details on their website, and premium there came up about 10% cheaper than what they offered me in renewal letter. So I called them, and over the phone they went down this 10% to match online price. All agreed and I paid a premium for next year. Few days after that, in end of June 2011, my wife crashed and wrote off my car (she was a named driver). It didn't affect premium for next year as this was already agreed and paid.
But now (June 2012) I got renewal premium from them again. It's accompanied by NCB statement, saying I have full NCB, but it also says "number of years claims free on this policy - 1 year", and obviously the claim is listed.
Renewal premium was nearly the same as proposed last year. So I went again and checked online, and again the same story. Online seems to be about 10% cheaper. So I rang them, but I was told that because I had a claim, I don't fulfill online quotation assumptions (that's true as one of the assumptions is that there was no claims in last 5 years) and I can't avail of online price. So this time they wouldn't match it, and if I want to stay with them I need to pay the price they proposed in renewal form.
I then tried few other insurers, but none of them was interested in insuring me, because of the claim.
But then I went to the broker, and broker found an insurer which not only would have no problem insuring me even though there was a claim, but would accept my full NCB as it was protected by previous insurer. Broker said that this insurer was Setanta, but unfortunately price they offered was the same as the one proposed by Allianz, so I decided that I'm not going to switch insurers as there is no savings in doing so.

So in short, I had NCB protection, I had a claim, but I can still avail of my full NCB. However my insurance is about 11% more expensive than it would be if I didn't have a claim. Also if I wanted I could switch to another insurer keeping my full NCB, but unfortunately choice of such insurers is very limited.
In general it was worth to have NCB protection (it cost only few euros extra with Allianz), but even though I had it, I ended up worse after the claim.

Maybe this info will be useful for someone in regards taking extra NCB protection or not taking it.
