I just found I got a place as a mature student. I have been trying to organise myself and am now really worried from reading what people have been saying about parking? Can someone explain what the parking situation is?

To park on the campus you need a designated student parking permit. They cost €20 per semester, €40 per academic year.
    Parking is enforced from 8.30 a.m. until 5.30 p.m., I think.

A parking permit doesn't guarantee you a spot on campus and doesn't allow you park in certain car parks, as they're reserved for staff permits. There are currently two pay and display car parks, one on each campus, but they're expensive (not sure how much, exactly).
There's also overflow parking in the Newtown Inn, and Maynooth GAA club.

The clampers are extremely vigilant and will clamp like billy-oh.
But that's on campus. I've found that they don't tend to check permits in the GAA club as stringently.
    HTH.

If you're in before half nine you have your choice of spots, after that it fills up quickly.

Buying a permit is fine. Sounds like it is going to be fun. Last thing you need after an hours drive is to battle to find parking. dreading it!

from memory, its possible if you are already a student as you need your student number to get a permit.

    No, if you are an NUIM student you must wait til September until term has already started. The first 1- 2 weeks will be free of charge. Parking enforcement dates and instructions on how to buy a permit will be announced here;

    http://campusservices.nuim.ie/traffic/index.shtml

Note dates on this site atm refer to the 2011/12 academic year.

If you want to park on the South Campus the site above links to APCOA who will now let you purchase a permit for St Patricks College only. From Sept it will include an option for NUIM.

Sorry to disagree with you but I purchased my permit and received it in the post before I returned in Sept last year, I just checked my emails. Parking enforcement was introduced a week after the term started last year, so I would assume they would do the same again this year.

The permit covers both the North and South campus, the pay and display on the South campus is continuing over the summer but students are still allowed to park in student areas with a permit.

During the summer, parking is free anywhere except the pay and display on south campus. No permits, no restrictions, park anywhere any time.

To me parking is a joke - when i did my undergrad there wasnt a snowballss chance in hell I would be burdened with the hassle of parking a car...
last year they introduced permit parking, I know people who occasionally drive and ended up putting there car in the super market car park.
40euro a year aint bad for the permit, but the pay and display is a rip off

    I drive to Maynooth.

Parking isn't great but its not that bad. If you're in early you will get a space easily (Say before 10:30) After that it fills up really fast until after 2:00 when people start leaving.

You will usually find a space before your lecture, if I cant then I would usually just go to Manor Mills. For the first month or two last year they had signs saying a max of 2 hours parking but they were removed to say no over night parking.

I dont think parking is that much of an issue, unless its raining in which case Im cursing the whole time between Manor Mills and my lecture (All of which were in JH1, arts block or Iontois)
