    Hi

I have a house that was built in 2001. It is 2 story detached. I got a quote for cavity wall insulation - €1950. Just getting some work done which required a hole in the wall and I've noticed that there is about 1inch thick insulation (don't know what it's called but it's the stuff that used for packing material in boxes - that white beady stuff). Do I need to get cavity wall insulation. I thought this was only if you didn't have wall insulation.

Sorry for not having the terminology - hope you understand.

I don't want to pay out that kind of money if it won't make much difference.

    Thanks.

You dont have get your walls insulated but if you do you will have a more comfortable home, heat wise, and will save yourself a good bit on heating costs.

€1950 seems a wee bit on the high side so I'd suggest you shop around. SEAI provide a grant see here but you will have to use a contractor from their approved list. Dont let the sales guys talk you into getting the insulation without applying for the grant. A lot of them have been telling people that they would be better off financially as they, the contractors, can do the job cheaper if there's no grant involved. Of course they can as they only give you about half of the insulation required with the added bonus of no one coming out to inspect it.

Just when I think of it I had Electric Ireland (formerly ESB) on the phone to me earlier to see if I was interested in getting the house insulated but I had this done 4 years ago. Worth a call to them for a free quote. Bord Gais do it also.

    Definitely price round.
We had a 2500 sq ft detached house done for about €500 less. In Cavan in fairness but do shop round.
