Vintage wedding.... can't find teacups

I have a year to go before the big day. I figured that if I started collecting vintage style tea cups early, I'd have a nice collection built up for the day.

Unfortunately I am having awful problems finding any!!!! It appears they are being snapped up from all the charity shops, by some clever entrepreneurs who then rent them out :)

I cannot blame them for their clever business idea, but I'd love to be able to find some nice cheap bits for the big day.

Is anyone else having the same problem?

It would be worth leaving your name into some charity shops, a lot of the time if they have just one cup, they won't sell it on its own and they'd be more than happy to let someone get some use out of it.

I'll just have to hang around outside them and try peeping into peoples bags as they come to donate :)

I have two sets of really good quality (wedgewood i think) that belonged to my nan that I know my mum wants to sell. PM me if you're interested.

I don't think much of the charity shops in Dublin. Have you tried Cork? There's heaps of them and most are on the same street.

Also a few good ones in Portlaoise. I think they're the best place to find quirky unique ones, and so cheap!

There is nothing crazy or unique about a vintage themed wedding. I'm totally aware of that. Most weddings are probably going with this theme.
However, my dress is quite a vintage style, and my venue is also. I have decided to work with what I have, and compliment what I have.
Also, I have always loved the old tea sets my granny used to have in her cabinet and I'd love to have a nice collection to hang onto after the big day :)

Try pearlandgodiva.com, someone else who got married at our venue used them and said they were great.

There's nothing insane about a vintage wedding, and nothing wrong with adding personal touches to the wedding to make it unique. If you can't be helpful in your post, I don't understand why there's a need to say things that come across as a bit insulting...

What about carboot sales? You'd get them way cheaper there than in any charity shop!

Personally, I think this is one of those things that only you and a small minority of guests will notice and therefore a bit of a waste of money but if it's what you want, try the Merchants Market (Details: http://www.merchantsmarket.ie/)

Loads of old tat down there and if you have a couple of hours to sift through it you'll definitely find a load of old crockery. We got some lovely glass jars to use for a candy buffet there for peanuts.

Your probably right but I don't mind doing it if it's not too expensive :)
Love car boots so may be tempted to head there tomorrow :)

I have a large collection of gorgeous teacups, saucers etc, even though I don't particularly want to use them for my wedding I nearly feel I should because so many people would kill for the collection of them I have! Just inherited a load of them in the last few years from both our grandmothers, sitting here in boxes getting used very rarely, but I fear it's the type of wedding thing that's going to get overdone very quickly...

Try putting a 'wanted' post on jumbletown and any other local council freebie sites, and of course keep an eye on what people are giving away. On jumbletown you need to update or bump your posts every day as it is a very busy site. I wanted to make bunting for my wedding and got tons of fabric from several jumbletown users :)

Sleepy, having looked at our budget (we're not doing too well on the savings front so far!), I have decided to give up on the teacups and just run with whatever the hotel supplies.
I've spent a fair few euro collecting bits and pieces for the day and I have nowhere near enough, so I am cutting my losses and flogging what I have!

Thanks for all your suggestions everyone!

I'm sure you can find other ways of getting the vintage look you want: choice of flowers, style of suits hired / brides and bridesmaids dresses vintage sweets on a candy cart?

One of the things we're doing might appeal though I'm not sure how practical it is for other couples: I collect old film cameras so I'm going to leave one loaded with film on every table as a twist on the old "disposable cameras on tables" idea. It'll add a bit of a vintage look whilst also hopefully getting us some interesting photos (as well as the different cameras having their own flavour of lens, I'll be loading the different camera with varying different films, some black and white, some high speed, very grainy, regular colour film etc.)

You could use the teacup for candles, I've seen ppl do that before... You'd only need a couple per table. Could make good use of ones you already have without buying anymore.

There are a few groups who rent teacups and other vintage accessories out. I think teacups are only around 90 cent each for weddings. Pearl and godiva are a company who do it.

LOVE that idea. Totally stealing it for random candles around the house!

Hi Grind Gremlin, have been following this thread as am trying to collect similar items, I see in your last post you are selling some of the stuff you have collected, have you got it advertised anywhere?
    Thanks!
