my friends has an 3130 john deere 6 cylinder tractor but its very hard to start due to low compression, he always used the easy start aerosol spray to get it started but lately this stuff has no effect on it at all so it must be a pretty bad case now

there is a high and low on this tractor thats working perfect and he was told that he could not start this tractor by towing it to start it as would wreck the high/low while others say it wont do any harm to it

I don't get it, what are you asking?

If the compression is that bad then the engine needs an overhaul, most importantly piston rings. No easy fix for that I'm afraid. Swallowing easy start only prolongs the inevitable..

Is there not a John Deere starting method, ie turn on in gear, turn key to start(it wont as its in gear)until the pump primes, turn off, put in neutral and then start? Mines like that. Easy start is sh1te anyway and ruins an engine - it burns too hot and fast and eats the valve seats, leading to even worse starting/compression.

just bite the bullet and get the engine reconditioned. the tractor should keep going then again for another 20+ years.

i was actually asking 2 questions first the tractor will not start up at all even when using "easy start" so engine must be in very bad condition or is it something else

    and second

can these john deere 3130 wth the high and low be towed to get them started as he does not want to wreck this on the tractor too

Not sure about that model but every other engine can be bump started. If there is no compression or not much it still wont start and the easy start has proberly made it so.
Get it reconditioned if they are worth doing.
    Good luck with it.

ok and it wont damage the fast/slow box ( there is a lever beside the steering wheel that controls this) in any way,

just need to be 100% sure

Personally I think you can't tow start that model as it has a hydraulic high low much like multipower. I may be wrong but I kinda doubt it. Friend/Neighbour is a JD specialist mechanic and I've to go see him anyway tmrrw - Ill ask him whats the common cause of poor compression/starting on that model and if you should tow start it or not. Where are you based 2pack as that lad rebuilds them tractors day in and day out.

different to multipower and dual power, you can start them with the hi/low pack , wont do any harm, I have a perfect head for one of them and a bottom end but the crank needs to be replaced

so what do you think is wrong with this, as no matter how bad an engine was could always get it to fire up with easy start..

what parts would he need to sort it out

Check if its fueling ok , most likely wear in the cylinders/broken rings/valve seats ,
get a compression test done first,

If you are stuck I have parts

there's something serious wrong if it wont start with easy start / ether, that stuff would start anything. Check how much of a blow there is from the dip stick hole with the engine running, if the wear is that bad it should be spraying oil out there.

yes there is some oil spraying out of dipstick so plenty of ware there.

spoke to a guy who repaired and sold john deeres for 20 years and he tells me if i try to tow this tractor to get it started i will indeed wreck the plates on the hi/low so not sure now what to do.

you need to make sure the engine is cranking over fast when you turn the key, make sure batteries, cables and starter are good and check for white smoke from the exhaust when its trying to start - if you have smoke get someone to remove the air filter element and spray a couple of shots of easy start directly into the pipe going to engine.. make sure the engine is swinging when you spray it to avoid doing any harm. if that doesnt work you are only wasting your time trying to tow it to be honest as it still wont start!!!

There is an engine on donedeal at the moment for handy money, as to recon one of these engines it would cost alot probily more than the tractor is worth, as for the hi/low pack never heard of the disks getting damaged from towing from my own experience - but its not proper practice to tow anything
