Moved from A&PI - might be more suited here as we don't really have an 'abroad' section that covers Gran Canaria

Unfortunately Gran Canaria is largely ignored by most birdwatchers. It doesn't have the mega birds like the Houbara bustard or the cream coloured courser which the other islands have. You will find blue chaffinch in the pine forests. Bertheot's pipit will be easy to see. Other notable species will include plain swift, canary, lesser short toed lark and trumpeter. There are a few egyptian vulture and barbary falcons on the Island I think.

The Cathedral in Las Palmas is a good spot for Barbary Falcon - got great views of a pair hunting feral pigeons from one of the viewing towers a few years back.

The lagoon at Maspalomas(popular resort area with the Irish) in the South of the Island is good for water birds and migrant waders like Whimbrels. Its a nature reserve right next to the popular nudist beach, so should be easy to find for first timers:D;)

Also Canarian Kestrels,Hoopoes,Blue Tits (like ours but bluer!) and a native partridge.
Have a look at this site for some ideas(not Gc but should be a lot in common)
