I have a 20 year old 4 wheeled car trailer which i want to re floor and get a bit more work out off. It has done nothing for about 5 years. There is large amounts of rust on it. How do you check whether it is about to collapse when you something in it or how do you check the extent to which it is corroded...
Thanks...i can upload photos but not now...

Unless it was made of poor steel to start with it should be fine...
Get a screwdriver and have a poke round where you think it's worst... particularly underneath round the spring hangers and the like... Look round welds to check for cracking...

After 5 years idle it would be a good idea to throw a dab of grease on the wheel bearings and check out the tyres for splits or just general rot/perishing.

I refloored our 8*5 earlier in the year and it is probably older than 20 years and the steel was fine, I painted it too and that was the first paint since we bought it second hand 18 years ago

new laws are coming about trailers and trailer testing, soon DIY trailers will be illegal to be on the road with, without a test cert.

Consider this before you put any money into this trailer.

So it's 'soon' and 'only a matter of time'. Not being a dick, but that sounds like opinion rather than fact tbh.

Does anybody know if there are any definite plans in place to test trailers in the future? I certainly havent heard anything definitive.

ECWVTA and related national approval schemes will apply to incomplete and complete trailers from 29th October 2012 and for completed trailers from 29th October 2013.

    Quote from btb's link.

Not currently subject to roadworthiness testing.

You may also need an EB licence if you don't already have one as you can only tow up to 750 kg on a standard licence and a 20 year old 4 wheeled steal trailer will be close to that before you even put a car on it.

I'd advise looking carefully at the details of the trailer weights and wording..
You can tow a combined weight of 3500kg providing the trailer is breaked.

For example, my X-trail is 1700kg, I can tow our 1400kg caravan and still be legal on my B liscence, this is confirmed by my insurance company, I keep a print out in the jeep as many Guards are a bit vague on this point..

From the NDLS website for Category B Liscence: (http://www.ndls.ie/en/Driving-Licence/driving-licence-categories.html)
"The vehicle may tow a trailer (a) where the MAM of the trailer is not greater than 750 kg or (b) where the MAM of the trailer exceeds 750kg the combined MAM of the towing vehicle and the trailer is not greater than 3,500 kg.."

OP, I don't think you need to worry about ECWVTA, that only applies to new trailers for sale since Oct 2012 by manufacturers or retailers.
