Tyre Pressure Indicator

    Hi Guys,

Just a quick one, I have a BMW with run flats. Last night I was out and I was pulling out of a parking space and hit the curb with the back passenger wheel. Then about a mile further up the road the TPI came on the dash and went off just as quick.

I have checked the the tyres to see if there is any damage to the tyres but nothing is visable to the eye. I still have to check the pressure of the tyres as it was dark when this happened last night.

I am just wondering if the TPI warning should stay on all the time, if the tyre is loosing pressure?

The Bora was '99 - '05 with no facelift AFAIK.

Should be fine but maybe someone with more experience can confirm for sure.

The tpi should stay on till the tyres have been pumped and confirmed via the I drive system

If its on the 5 series it will show a warning symbol on the screen between the mph/ rpm and not nessacarily on the large screen as u can access the radio functions etc and can be hidden

To get rid of the TPI warning you have to reset the system while the car is stationary. After you confirm you want to reset the system it should prompt you that it will reset when you drive off as it has to take a reading of your tyre pressure. After about a minute of driving it will have reset. If there is still a loss of pressure the system will alert you again otherwise it will stay off.

The TPI came on once on my car for no reason, checked the tyre pressure and no issues. I reset the system and it didn't appear again except for a genuine puncture months down the road. You could have damaged the senor when you hit the curb too or simply the force of impact set it off. Either way I would have the tyre and rim checked.

    There is no pressure sensor.

It works by using input from the abs system. A low pressure tyre has a different diameter and thus must turn a different number of times for a given distance.

The system knows how many turns are normal ( which is why you have to reset stationary and then drive off) and once outside a certain range it pops up the warning.
