    Hi all,

Hoping someone can tell me exactly where this park is as I cannot find it on any maps that I've looked at. I understand that there is a dog run recently opened and I love to see it.

    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

There is... First I've heard of it, although I have stopped going there with my dogs, anyway here's a link to where the park is. You will see from the map that Grifeen Ave cuts the park into two sections, the lower part beside Tullyhall is where the dog park is most likely to be as the other side is full with football/gaelic pitches! (I could be wrong though with its location)

That link isn't working for me.
    I know there's a car park here: http://goo.gl/maps/cggw

Really?? Isnt it mad the difference a few months make! Last time I was in the park they had planned for a recycling centre there!! I may go over and check it out without the dogs (she's currently in heat and he's been sent away for it)

It's South Dublin County Council you should be thanking!

Personally, I think it is way too small.

I'm also disappointed by their decision not to allow huskies in. Whilst I disagree with banning any particular breed, at least using the "restricted breeds list" (as moronic as that list is) is based on some legal foundation. Banning huskies is just reactionary nonsense.

Yes it could be a bit bigger alright but still delighted to have it.

Is it not common practice not to allow huskies into these dog parks? I absolutely agree with you though. We should be looking at the dog and not the bread. I guess however that this would be very difficult to enforce.

I know that in the Marly Park dog run where the rules forbid certain breads owners use it anyway!

The dogs on the RB are not allowed in? Well F*** that anyway!!

At least now there be no excuses for people to have their dog off the leads in the park.

While most dogs are under control a few are annoying to us runners and to my kids when i bring them to the park.

I'd imagine that's part of the reason for putting them in.

Huskies? I always thought of them as friendly loyal dogs:confused:

    How/why are they banned?

There is no mention of Huskies on the list of dogs not allowed into the dog run, the rules of the run are at each entrance to the run and only list dogs on the restricted breeds list....

That's good to know - haven't read the signs yet.

Two SDCC employees from the parks department had said they would be banning restricted breeds and huskies. When I asked why huskies I was told it was because of an incident in the Corkagh Park dog run.

I'm glad huskies will be allowed.

Shame I have a huskie and wanted to head in there....oh well. :(

Saw the run yesterday, there is a list of breeds not allowed and I don't think Huskies are on the list - will check to be sure next time I pass

One thing I don't understand is that the dog run does not have a gate on it. Dogs could easily escape...

The sign does not say huskies are excluded - it was a SDCC worker who said they would be, before the sign went up. Hopefully you and your husky will be able to enjoy the run! :)

It's not officially finished yet. There will apparantly be a gate.

    There are two entrance/exits

It looks like a pair of gates should be put up at both, but one at each side would be helpful as some dogs do run out at times.

I have had my 2 dogs in this park a lot since the fences went up - it is a God-send!!
Will be even better when they finish it....the gates are on order along with bins and a drinking trough for the dogs. The dogs that run out tend to go straight to the river, one of mine included....!
Huskies are definitely not banned - they are not on the sign, and I've seen about 4 or 5 different huskies there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66,402 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Thanks for confirming the Huskies are not on the list, LizBea and welcome to boards.ie :)

That's just so the council can cover themselves if anything happens. RBs are allowed in and the ranger's won't say anything to you. You may get the odd person who will complain, but most of us are very welcoming of all friendly dogs :) What do you have?

I have two Rottweilers, I used to walk in the park but I havnt been there in about 6 months. I go just up the road a lot more up to Grangecastle industrial estate, the lake and river that lead into the canal are so clean in comparison to the river running through Griffeen.

The dogs love water so much its very hard to not let them in for a spash, the Griffeen river is just far too dirty.

I may take a trip up in the coming days just to be nosy :D

There are always huskies in there. Just been there and three came in in a space of 2 hours

I think I've seen you around. You wouldn't believe the amount of times you hear 'oh watch out, there's a guy with two rottweilers down that end of the park' when you're around. I knew I hadn't heard that in awhile... I think you should walk right into the dog run with them. Get rid of all the ignorant people :D

Lack of enforcement is never an excuse to break a rule / law. If you have a problem with the list of dog breeds not allowed in, you should contact / challenge the county council. Not advocate people to break the rules here.

Lol, now I really want to go in after hearing that!!

Ah there's two separate people with 2 Rottweilers!! One guy stays over in the far side nearest the train tracks he's got two male Rottweilers! (not me a.f.a.i.k his name is Alan) and then there's me with my two, if it is me you have seen I have a male and female, my female would only have been tiny in comparison to my male the last time I was over there!!

Currently letting my male recover from some bad hot spots, should be fine by the weekend so I may take a trip over on Sunday!

Not sure if you're serious or not?
The sign says Rottweilers aren't a breed allowed, while your dogs may be fine, that would be beside the point as then others who are less careful or whose dogs are aggressive then have an open to just go, or think that they can use it.

Its a bit unfortunate but I have come across people with dogs that are careless about how they interact and allow their dog/s interact with other dogs/people, not that Im saying you are, some of these dogs are not on the RB list, most were.

I was serious, but I wouldn't let my dogs into the off leash park for the simple reason I know the wardens are strict to a certain degree over there.

I have met them twice before when I only had one dog and I had him off leash, they didn't get annoyed or anything they just asked to put him back in the lead, I had no issue at all and did so. I was the only person around and I was right at the far side near the playground, no kids around no dogs around that's the only time I'd let my dogs off tr leash.

I was told some time later by a guy with a retriever that the warden got snotty with him about his dog being off leash, that was the last day I went to the park!! Must be easily 6 months now!!!

It's a great park for dog walking, but there are far too many unsocialised(or angry whichever you'd prefer) dogs who love a nip, I for one don't want my dog bitten by someone else's dog so I don't go there! I am just interested and slightly nosy so I want to see the dog park ;)

Nope that's not me that's the other guy! I have only seen his 2nd dog once. I would have mainly been over the other side where all the pitches are, you probably may have only seen me with one of my dogs there as I kind of stopped going to that park once I got my 2nd dog! I've got a few pictures up in an album on my page of the both of them you may recognise them.

I wouldn't even have a problem with any dog that might need to be on a leash and in the dog park, it could be an idea to walk them at the outside edge as it still gives them the opportunity to meet other dogs, they can have a good smell of each other through the fence, its not the same but its something.
I have come across people that were unwilling to put their dogs on a leash when they were not under control, not there but elsewhere and a previous poster reminded me of that couldn't care less of anyone else attitude.

Hi I have a 5yr old female lab who is fab with people, kids and cats but a little fussy wen it comes to dogs, In fairness we didnt socialise her very well with dogs as a pup as we didnt really have anywhere or anydogs to do so at the time. My problem is shes extremely playful with cats and id live for.her to be able to go In and play in dog run and make some doggy friends but because shes nervous of bouncy hyper type dogs she has nipped a few in the past much to my embarrassment so im afraid to bring her in incase she.causes uproar!!! Would anyone with a big calm dog who walks in griffeen park be interested in helping me desensitise her to the dog park. Ps she is very well behaved otherwise and has been to a few different behavior classss, nome of whuch helped with her dog fear though! I can muzzle her for interactions if you are confident enough ur.dog wont retaliate to any growls etc. someone plz help. Thanks..
