Rooting a sensation (explain)

I've never rooted a phone, and in all honesty, don't fully understand it either

At the moment I have a HTC sensation, but since the ics upgrade the phone has become ridiculously slow. I now call it the 10 second phone. Because everything I touch takes at least 10 seconds to load.

So my question to the forum is this. What is rooting, what are its benefits and can a complete newb manage it without breaking his phone?

Have you tried backing up all your photos and texts and performing a full factory reset? http://www.htc.com/help/au/howto_iframe.aspx?id=50618&type=1&p_id=399

Mine was as slow as hell after upgrading to ICS, I was fit to bin it and buy a new one. I gave it one last chance and performed a factory reset and it's now as good as I could hope for.

I'm guessing you're back to the original OS then, so no longer running ICS?

Nope, you'll still be running ICS but with a cleaned down phone.

There should really be a stick explaing, what is rooting, how to do it etc etc

The iOS forum has one on Jail breaking why can't we get one on rooting

I'm guessing because there is only 1 iPhone but loads of different android phones. Each phone will have a different method for rooting.
XDA forum will show anyone how to root their phone

Android phones are mostly "jailbroken" out of the box as they are not locked to the one app store like the iPhones are (not to mention requiring iTunes to use). Rooting will allow you run some scripts (fix permissions) and stuff but your best bet is probably just to backup and factory reset. If you want to run particular root only apps well then obviously rooting will be of benefit (ad free, titanium backup, rom manager, terminal are some).
If you want to root and install a custom ROM look into using Cyanogenmod 9, I have found custom roms always to be faster and have the best battery life, as well as less bloated than stock (you'll loose HTC Sense going the custom route until someone ports it over)
